B-hyve XD Hose Faucet Timer

I have used Orbit automatic watering systems for several years. It used to be you had to program your inexpensive Smart Watering system manually. It worked great; saved me lots of time and aggravation. I say inexpensive because the B-Hyve costs $80 to $90. The alternative, which I used for years was to water my lawn and plants manually, having to move the hose and sprinklers all the time. Of course, I could spend thousands of dollars installing an underground sprinkler system, which requires expensive maintenance. Then, Orbit introduced Orbit B-hyve that could be controlled by an App connected via Bluetooth. It worked fine, but it had distance limitations, so sometimes I had to open my windows to connect the App. Later, Orbit came out with the Gen 2 wi-fi hub. From that point on it has been extremely helpful. Almost perfect. We need to understand that the complete system only costs $100 - $120. For that money you get a reliable automatic watering system that control up to 4 sprinklers (8 in my case); the system can be programmed using the App. The programming is very friendly. You program dates, times and zones very easily. Unfortunately, as in every existing App in the market, you have to read the INSTRUCTIONS. In addition to the automatic watering based on your program(s), you may instruct the system to water your lawn manually. When there is expected rain, you can delay watering by hours or days. The system is so good that using your location, they automatically delay the watering if there is forecasted rain in your area. These benefits are what I call it a GREAT product. All for one time purchase of $100-$120 Honestly, I cannot understand the terrible reviews that some "uninformed" individuals write about this product. So, everything went perfect? Not really. I had two 4 port watering system, both connected to ONE wi-fi Hub. There were times that they could not connect to the wife Hub. After talking to customer service, they suggested for me to add on more Hub (less than $30) and since then (more than one year) the system has worked as designed. Please understand that a $28 Hub, cannot provide the perfect wi-fi connectivity. It is NOT an I-Phone! Give it a try and SAVE thousands of $$$$'s but please read the Instructions before using and be patient. It has a learning curve.

At this point I have two of the Orbit 24634 B-hyve XD 4-Port Smart Hose Watering Timers and one of the Orbit 21027 B-hyve Gen 2 Wi-Fi Hubs. I only recommend this if you plan to use your phone (I have an iPhone) to control things. It can be hand programmed, but I would not suggest doing it that way except to initially set the clock (that must be done at the unit). A good place to understand how to set things up and see how it functions can be found here on YouTube. Unfortunately, links are not allowed, but try googling “Orbit B-Hyve XD Smart WiFi Water (Hose) Timer - Unboxing, Configuring, and Review” You do not need to buy the hub to control the watering timers. They will work fine with Bluetooth. However, Bluetooth has a limited range. If you want to be able to control the watering timers wherever your local WIFI network exists or even remotely when you are on WIFI (like on vacation) you will want the Gen 2 hub – you only need one. It was nice getting watering notices when I was recently out of town. The hub should be located where it can reach all your water timers with Bluetooth (I would say 10-20 feet – 10 ft if you are going thru brick façade, etc.). It only works at 2.4 GHz. Start with programing each of the Zones (see you tube video above). Since I have two water timers I gave them different names so I can tell which is which. When you have things programmed (I have a program for each Zone on each watering timer) then play with the app. There are a lot of options and the easiest way to figure things out is to try all the options. Store this thing inside where it is warm for the winter (before the first freeze). Getting all the water out is hard and things can freeze in the garage. If it freezes most likely will stop working due to damage. Big plus is the unit seems to be water tight. In particular, the battery pack has an O-ring to seal water out. The water timers run on only 2 AA batteries. The WIFI hub plugs into the wall. If things are powered down, you will need to add them back to your phone app (for example moving the WIFI hub location). I have only had this equipment for about two weeks so I am not sure what happens when you pull the batteries. Hopefully there is static memory so when you put new batteries in you don’t need to reprogram it, but I would suspect it needs to be reconnected to the phone app.

So many issues, I don't know where to begin... Says I'm connected but doesn't respond, times out after 30 seconds. Running program manually with the app, it takes 15+ seconds before starting. Then, even though watering has begun, the display on the app does not acknowledge it, times out and displays an error message about it not responding. (I don't think this company has quite figured out how Bluetooth works.) Even though I had not entered a program for the second hose, I came out to find it running and the area underneath the unit flooded. Tried to set the start time on the unit but it displays a lock that I couldn't get past - eventually figured out that it means that it was set using the app. (Maybe?) If you begin to program it on the device and change your mind, you have no way to exit. Battery indicator on app has a color bar on the left that is too dark to see the number. Does not like rechargeable batteries. Battery box on back is very difficult to remove. Need to remove the unit from the faucet or loosen it enough to rotate it to get to the battery box.

I recently purchased an additional one on sale for the other side of my house. I have owned the other for over a year, and I simply love it. It can factor in weather, drought conditions, and environmental data to optimize watering schedules, helping to conserve water while still keeping plants healthy. For anyone managing a lawn, garden, or multiple zones from a single spigot, this level of automation is a major upgrade over traditional timers. Build quality is solid overall. It’s designed for outdoor use with a water-resistant housing, and once properly tightened, connections tend to be secure and leak-free. The unit also includes a physical display and onboard controls, which is a nice fallback if you don’t want to rely entirely on your phone. There are a couple of trade-offs worth noting. Out of the box, it relies on Bluetooth, so remote control and full “smart” functionality require purchasing the Wi-Fi hub separately. Some users also report that initial setup with the hub can be a bit finicky, although once configured, the system is generally reliable. Just YouTube videos for setup and functionality, and you are all set. Requires 2 AA batteries, which tend to last an entire summer season.

In general, this 2-port unit is an excellent item. Expensive, yes. But does what it is advertised to do, and does it with a relatively intuitive interface, either manually via controls on the device directly or via a Bluetooth-connected app. (I don't have the supplemental Wi-Fi unit, so cannot speak to that connection capacity.) I am giving it a 4-star rating rather than 5 because the first unit I received failed on the first battery change after about 9 months of use (would not boot up). Happily, the company replaced it under the warranty with no hassle (and no fees) whatsoever, so 5 stars for that customer service. Will update this review after another year or so of use. Note: I have another similar unit, 4-port rather than 2, which so far is functioning fine; but again I want to give it more time before a final review.

I bought the Orbit B-hyve XD 4-Port Smart Hose Watering Timer specifically to automate watering for my vegetable garden and flower beds, and it has been a game-changer this season. No more forgetting to water or overwatering during hot spells—my plants are thriving with consistent moisture, and I’ve saved a noticeable amount of time and water. It then pulls local weather data and adjusts schedules automatically—skipping watering after rain and optimizing run times so I don’t waste water. I’ve set different programs for each port (e.g., shorter cycles for delicate flowers, longer for thirstier veggies), with up to 4 start times per zone. The Bluetooth range is decent for quick checks, and full Wi-Fi control means I can start/stop or adjust from anywhere. If you have a garden or flowers and hate daily watering chores, this 4-port XD model is worth every penny. It keeps my plants healthy with minimal effort and has paid for itself in water savings and convenience. Highly recommend—especially the multi-port version for zoned watering. 5/5 stars! Would buy again. Perfect for busy gardeners. 🌱

I wrote another review of the 4 port unit. This one is just as good. Adding it to Wi-Fi was a little tricky in that you have to put the hub in pairing mode to add another unit, which really isn't discussed in the manual. It's pleasing to hear the front yard run then the backyard, as if they're one unit, which in a sense they are. Orbit has done a good job bringing their units into the digital age.

3 starts, but I still bought a second one! The bluetooth connection is terrible. It does eventually connect most of the time if I'm standing right next to it. Wifi works at much greater range and is more reliable, but it can take a long time to connect. When it connects it's pretty nice. The interface isn't the best, but it has lots of features. The smart water (wifi module required) looks pretty cool, but hasn't kicked in to start watering in over a month have having been set up. It says 8 days... perpetually. It does stop the watering for rain and wind delays just fine. The smart features really do look pretty detailed and cool... but I just don't know if they actually work (for one timer they have yet to turn on at all). All that said for your basic timer of which you can have several with 4 zones each, it's pretty decent. If you don't have buried pipe but you do have hoses, and especially if you just put down grass seed, this is a MUST have - even with all its flaws. And who knows maybe the flaws will shake themselves out (or maybe I'm doing something wrong). But just having a time for hoses is great and this is the best one out there, warts and all.

Works well. Needs a wifi hub to connection without Bluetooth. Also very "hard" stops and starts. Program on app confusing. Zone D doesn't correspond to outlet 4. Need to use program 4. Once worked out it works 100% though.
