Perfect for small grinding tasks.
I knew the bowl was small when I purchased. Perfect for when you just need to grind small quantities. It is heavy little item made of course out of cast iron and painted black. Perfect for my very occasional need. Every kitchen should have one of these.

Made of black painted steel, not cast iron.
I'm not a metallurgist, but I have cast iron skillets, and this is not cast iron. I assume it's black painted steel. I guess it looks like cast iron, except for the shiny silver parts where the paint has rubbed off on the base of the pestle, and the edges of the mortar base. I don't think it would be that bad if I wasn't worried about ingesting black paint from the grinding process.

Meh Toy size
Nice very small toy like the size that belongs in a doll house ot down that line.I'm not sure it could be useful for more than an ashtray or somthing like that.

Good for black paint
Me simple cave man. Not want mortar and pestle for cook with fancy spices, only for crush rocks for make paint. This mortar and pestle not cast iron, but very good for make black paint. Not good for make white paint. Mortar and pestle has black paint on it. Black paint come off when crush rocks. Make white paint not white. Make black paint fine. Me like use mortar and pestle. You use mortar and pestle for crush rocks, good. You use mortar and pestle for cook, bad. Unless you like eat black paint? Then good.
