Q: Are these reliable good sounding speakers ?

They are not high end units, but for the price it’s a decent clean signal.

Q: How do I power on the speaker and get it to actually work? I'm a complete newbie and I didn't receive any power adapters.

This is a passive speaker. It has no power and no way to be powered. It needs to be paired with an amplified signal, such as a power amplifier. Think of a stereo system with an amplifier, or a PA system. Also, you need special “Speakon” connectors on the speaker cable to plug into this speaker. Powered speakers are available (built in amplifier) if you have a sound source that doesn’t have its own amplifier, eg a sound board. But this isn’t one of them.

Q: How do i connect a microphone to speaker? can i just plug an xlr into the mic and then into the speaker or do i need an amp or mixer or something?

Basically you need some way to power the signal from the mic. So either a separate amplifier (like a PA system) or a “powered speaker” (built in amp).
