I had read bad reviews of this decoder, and I though it was probably a matter of people just not knowing what they were doing. That may ultimately be true, but I'm halfway decent at this kind of thing, and it didn't work for me. I followed all the instructions I could to the letter, and it still fried on me. Very disappointed in the time and money wasted on this. I've upgraded DC locos to DCC before with no issues, so I'm not sure why this one is difficult to install. Maybe it just isn't a very good unit to begin with, or maybe it's so difficult to install that it should only be attempted by professionals (if there is such a thing, lol). If it's this hard to get going for someone with my experience with electronics, soldering, and even other DCC upgrades, then it's not a very good product. If the product is either of poor quality or requires an extreme level of expertise or secrete, esoteric knowledge beyond what's in the manual and general best practices, then it's not for us and I can't recommend it. I recommend that you spend the money and purchase a more expensive unit that has a better track record with us DIY folks. If you're looking for a similar budget decoder, and you're OK with no sound, the Digitrax HO DCC Decoder Series 6, 2-Functions 9-Pin 1A, DGTDH126D is really great, cheap, and works well.

I have had 5 Digitrax decoders, and 3 of them went with very little use. This one stopped working right in front of me.I installed it in a DC engine with a socket for the decoder, and ran it on my home layout. Brought it to the club layout, and ran it for about 3 hours. It came down a straight section of track and stopped. The sound quit at the same time, and it hasn't worked again, even on my home layout.These things are junk. I have installed SIX Soundtraxx decoders, and NOT ONE has gone bad. THREE out of FIVE Digitrax decoders have gone bad.I missed a sale of this last engine, because Digitrax DIED!!!

I installed this Digitrax decoder to convert an analog OO locomotive to DCC computer control. It ran for a day on DCC and then stopped. I checked all the wiring and then changed the loco back to analog DC. It again ran. I hooked it up again to the decoder, checked all the wiring, and nothing.I had another Digitrax decoder, without sound, and I've switched them several times. The non-sound one works well, but not this one.So I sent it in to Digitrax, I thought under their "No Worries" warranty. They sent me another one, that again worked for a day and then nothing. I've spent more on this decoder (sending it in for "repair") than I saved. When the sound worked it was great, but only for a day. I'll keep the speaker, but the rest is junk.

Digitrax claims on their website that this decoder will handle 16 bit sound files. It doesn't have enough flash memory to hold them, but this information is nowhere to be found until you actually try to download the file into the decoder. Their PR4 interface will then show you that the 16 bit file is too large for the decoder. You can only load 8 bit sound files, which sound very primitive.If you want 16 bit sound you must order a decoder with an X in the product code. Digitrax doesn't tell you this.They also will not exchange or refund you for this if you ask.Buyer beware.

Worked for a bit I should have listened to the reviews. I have tried it in 3 different locomotives. Waste of money

it had good sound but then after one day its stop working. the train stop running. when i take it off the train run again without sound.
