Beyblade E1029 Switch Strike Fafnir F3 spin top

My 7 year old gives this 5 stars. It was what we expected. The packaging was damaged and taped shut, but the bey was fine.

It's funny how old becomes new again, especially when it comes to toys. This toy is basically a modern version of the top, a spinning top (a dreidel to some), but it comes with a little launching device. When I was a kid we had wooden tops (they were quite a craze for a year or two and would make an occasional comeback) that you wound string around and then fired down onto the pavement--either the street or someone's sidewalk. You could play alone, of course, but it was more fun to compete in terms of how long your top spun vs one of your friend's tops.But, boys being boys, eventually that got boring and a simple game turned into a battle scene: the goal was to spin your top and attack others and see whose lasted the longest without getting knocked into the gutter. The tops took quite a lot of abuse, but they were inexpensive and you could usually talk your parents into a new one (or two) if it kept you out of their hair for an hour on Saturday. Essentially the Beyblade Burst Evolution is a very modern version of an old-fashioned top. It comes with a little launching device and you pull a plastic ripcord to launch the top. You can, by the way, launch it by hand and it will spin, but without the really high velocity that you get from the launching gizmo.I watched several videos on Youtube and apparently kids are very into this and they even have little acrylic domes where they go into battle. I didn't have the arena (or anyone to do battle with) but I used this like an old fashioned top. I launched it on the kitchen floor and suddenly realized this was also very fascinating toy to cats, lol. Lesson learned: if you want this to spin or more than a few seconds, put the cats in another room. It's a kind of fun toy (but also pricey, which is why I gave it four stars, not five) and it does spin pretty wildly, but all it did for me was make me miss the days of the old wooden tops. I kept thinking I'd love to get one of my old tops out and do battle with some kid and this newfangled version.The truth is though that, price aside, this is kind of a fun top and I can see why kids are so turned on by them (and they are very popular). I don't have any kids that young around or I'm afraid I'd be buying them one of those domes and showing them that once a top master, always a top master.

My 10-year old was excited to get a new "bursting" Beyblade (just like his friend's!) to add to his arena, but no matter how many times we tried we couldn't get this one to burst--it just works like a normal Beyblade. He gave up after an hour and hasn't picked this back up again.
