A great book!
Assigned to read in seminary, it was one of my favorite books from my time spent in the M.Div. It is a wonderful read that helps the reader understand how Christian doctrine has developed until today, and why we are standing on the shoulders of so many that have dealt with doctrinal controversy long before we have.

Study To Show Thyself Approved
The semester is over for History and Theology of Church. This book was a real eye opener on the history of the church and the order worship for the church and what it took to bring forth truth. Thank you

So well written. An asset to anyone's library who is interested in where the church(es) of today came from. The continuity and influence through the ages of the people of Christ becomes evident. Fascinating and readable!

Heavy text!
I bought this to do some studying at home, and it required focus, time and I would recommend someone to study with. I enjoy the time I get to sit down & dig in to the text to clarify and solidify what I already believe about my faith and about following Jesus. Good text

Basic and Readable
A great resource for a wholesome picture of the history of Chrisitian Theology. Of many textbooks that I have used this is one that I have kept and continue using. Surface level introduction with key information to spark deeper learning. Recommended for all levels.

astonishing. overwhelming. unique?
Anybody who writes about a theological issue assuming the issue has never before been addressed should forget it. After this early point, McGrath sets out to demonstrate.Summarizing and analyzing the writings of what must be literally hundreds of people who have written about theology or related subjects over 2000 or more years, he puts Christian theology under many different microscopes. Some of his biases are present, but not by exclusion. It is difficult for me to believe that one man can understand and remember so much about so many, so I conjure visions of dozens of minions researching away and other dozens of minions organizing and editing.Nevertheless, quite an accomplishment! Can anybody suggest a similar effort?

Another good work by Alistair McGrath
As well as being readable McGrath's work is also valuable. A worthwhile addition for anyone interested in the subject - although be aware it is more about the development of Christian theology than Christian history.
