Melanie, Bird with a Broken Wing: A Mother's Story

I just finished reading this book for a course I am taking at FIU and I can’t help but say that this was a book I didn’t put down until I finished it. It was exciting to read about this mother’s journey with her little bird, but I honestly am distraught at the ending. I have never reacted so intensely to a book, movie, or story but this one shook my world. My heart goes out to the author and her family and I 100% recommend anyone considering reading this book, to do it.

in this book, Dr. Harry illustrates, in example upon example, a parent's dark, intense grief and fear for her severely disabled daughter, Melanie, and the parent's triumph in not only learning how to care for Melanie but also figuring out how to get Melanie educated, learning and growing so that the child could reach her potential. It is difficult for people who do not know the anguish to understand the feelings and perspectives of parents who have children with special needs. This book lays out the realities of parenting such a child and, in so doing, helps the reader grow in understanding and compassion. This book improves hearts and opens minds."Melanie," in my opinion, should be on every book list for special educators -- in colleges and universities that train special education teachers, for school district training, and on book lists for administrators who oversee special education programs. It is also an essential book for parents and families who are struggling with or who have a loved one struggling with parenting a child with a disability.

I had to get this book for a class I’m currently taking in college. Besides from receiving the book in great condition the story is an amazing story. I loved it.

Very factual & descriptive. I needed a book for a master’s paper on children that are extra ordinary, and this was a good story.

No words to describe the power this book has on acceptance, endurance but above all, unconditional love. Thank you Dr Harry for changing my today and shaping my tomorrow as I embrace the challenges of motherhood and work hard on advocating for those who need us the most as a special education teacher.
