How do I choose the right cast net size, weight, and mesh?

Use 3–6ft nets for beginners, 8–12ft for pros. 1/4” mesh targets small bait; 3/8” works for most. Heavier weights (1.0+ lb/ft) sink faster, but even our 0.75lb/ft sink faster than competitors with our custom monofilament line.

What kind of water can I use the nets? Salt or freshwater?

All nets work in both, but rinse with clean water after use. Zinc Iron weights are rust-resistant for several months only and better suited for freshwater; Lead and PVC Protected weights are rustproof and ideal for all environments with proper care.

What’s the difference between BasicGear and BasicGear Pancake series cast nets?

Our standard nets are for novice to average level users, using zinc iron, lead and PVC protected weights. Our Pancake series cast nets are commercial-grade, offering lead and PVC protected weights and even more premium materials and construction.

Cast Net

I order the 1/4inch mesh 8ft net which is perfect for the local bait i catch. Great quality and the wrist strap is nice n comfortable

Small mesh is good for anchovies.

I use this on the central/northern coast of California. Mostly for herring, but specifically this size, the 1/4" mesh is better for our small anchovies. The larger size ends up tearing the anchovies apart when removing them from the net. The smaller mesh captures them better without damaging the fish.
