EVEN (David Trevellyan Thriller Book 1)

A very good read
It's nice to gave a hero who isn't stupid and can't see the obvious until the end. The plot is a bit too far-fetched and there are a few less than credible decisions by other characters to gloss over plot holes. I managed to suspend my disbelief enough to just enjoy the story. Annoyingly there are a few spurious spaces in the middle of words in the Kindle version. Looking forward to reading book 2.

Cracking thriller....save for the end!
For 95% of this book, this was a really top thriller and I was expecting to give it 5 stars but the end was so disappointing. First, the plot became so complicated as the author tried to tie up the various strands and a new ridiculous one involving something more appropriate for a horror story, I hadn’t a clue what was going on. Then the last page was so abrupt with the reader left to imagine what happened, I wondered if someone had torn some pages out of my copy!

Wasn't gripped...
This is Lee Child's brother who has taken over the Jack Reacher books...not the same punch....the storyline did not grip me and I lost track of the characters....could be lockdown but I was a bit disappointed.

A sad waste of money
I bought this book because I had read that the author was Lee Child's brother and would be taking over the Reacher books. Sad!y this means I will not be wasting my money on the new enterprise. Evens is poorly written, the plot is ridiculous and the villains are straw men characterised by insane levels of violence. The attempts to give the hero substance by recounting incidents from his past are not really helpful more an unnecessary interruption of the flow. He uses many of the Teacher tropes, the elbow to the temple, the head butt these are only words, flat, lacking connection with the action. In short there is nothing to recommend this book and I could not finish it. I did not start expecting a Reacher novel, I had hoped to find a new writer worth following unfortunately I did not. David Trevellyan lacked any substance and the plot was flimsy and had no coherence.

Disappointed
I was intrigued when I learned that Lee Child, (whose every single book I’ve read with complete enjoyment), has a brother who is also an author and having looked at the synopsis of this book I decided to give it a go. I was a little disappointed as it seemed the author was trying to emulate the writing of his brother and his main coffee loving character was a poor mans version of coffee loving Jack Reacher. I found the plot ok but was a bit slow in places, jumped around a lot and the violence of his main character didn’t sit well with me. The most annoying thing about this book is that it finished abruptly without finding out what happened to the villain, only for the fact that there was an excerpt of his next book at the end which revealed this, I would have been extremely frustrated. I consider authors who write this way whereby you need to purchase their next book to get closure on their previous book are not confident in their writing and the need to con people into buying their next book quite distasteful. Because of this I decided that I wouldn’t continue to purchase books by this author.

Good Read BUT Not on a Kindle
This was a good read for fans of Lee Child, Vince Flynn, Brian Haig, and Tom Clancy. Well written, action packed, all around great escapism. My only complaint is with the Kindle version. In the interests of full disclosure, Amazon did refund my purchase price. But, given to poor quality of Kindle formatted books (numerous spelling errors, missing pages, missing chapters, and so on) I am about ready to give up on Kindle. Let's face it - the Kindle price for this book was higher that the hardback (new from Amazon) and the paperback (also new from Amazon). The only reason to pay more for a Kindle version is for convenience, but what's the point of that if the reading experience is so poor? And to all you Kindle publishers out there - scanning a book and running OCR software is not sufficient!

Well written but the plot is really weak — probably deserves 3 1/2 stars.
I should probably give this book 3 and 1/2 stars (instead of 3 stars). The book is well written — the prose and dialogue flow well. However the plot is not up to scratch — just way too many improbable pieces in this puzzle. The only real character development is around the protagonist — the supporting cast get almost nothing but superficial stereotypes (at best). I hope Andrew Grant’s brother — Lee Child — helps him “flesh out” the plots of the new Reacher novels better than this.
