25 years after Paris Is Burning introduced the art of voguing to the world, Kiki revisits New York City’s thriving underground ballroom scene. It’s a larger-than-life world in which LGBTQ youths of color are empowered by staging elaborate dance competitions that showcase their dynamic choreography, fabulous costumes, and fierce attitude. It’s also a safe haven for struggling, at-risk teens who find acceptance, support, and friendship within the Kiki community. Granted intimate access to the scene, filmmaker Sara Jordenö introduces viewers to some of Kiki culture’s most prominent personalities, going beyond the glamour of the balls to highlight the serious challenges facing queer black and Latino young people. Bringing together heartrending personal stories with incredible displays of creative expression, Kiki is “exhilarating…an indelible, must-see ode to gay New York” (Manohla Dargis, The New York Times).

The Inside of The Beautiful People
Kiki is a most important documentary in to the life styles of a select group of beautiful human beings that have yet to earn the proper respect they deserve. Chi Chi Mizrahi does a beautiful job showing how life on the other side looks. I Ioved the theatrics, clothing and stories from the familys and people who allowed a look into their personal lives. This is a viewing must for the people who want to understand what goes on in the fantastic culture of Ball Room and the lives of a different Human Being..... I loved it!!!!!!

AMAZING artful documentary
AMAZING artful documentary. This is an important film about an incredible community of young people who are creative and resilient. They create community and family through their shared experiences of living their true lives as LGBT people and their activism and artistry is truly inspiring. An artful, humane and deeply moving film.

It was nicely filmed, being from New York and going to some of the balls from theParis is Burning era and knowing Paris, Pepper.etc. It was big let down to see how low rent these newbies look and how lacking they are in looks.

Overall: Positive (Worth Seeing)
Kiki is a film which pursues being straight forward with you. There is a deep desire for you to connect to these people and recognize their humanity. Not through one sob story after another, but just recognizing they are deserving. That they have fears, laugh and cry, and being queer or trans isn’t their entire life or story. It is a small part that for some reason is treated like a huge deal. So they hope and fight for a time when it isn’t. For they recognize that their culture, their people, they can’t survive if the nation and the world remains indifferent or oblivious. So they, while perhaps uncomfortable, they speak out to you in hopes you may change things in your own way. No matter how small.
