The Secret of Great Power?
It began with his Magnificent Obsession. In the story of a young doctor's search for new and innovative ways to solve his patient's illnesses, Lloyd Douglas hinted at a diary written by an imminent brain surgeon. The problem was the journal did not really exist outside of Douglas' mind. So many inquires came that he finally had to write the novel that contained the journal. Lloyd Douglas was a preacher-theologian. In Doctor Hudson's Secret Journal, he hinted at a Biblical text that gives the secret of how to gain great power. I and thousands of others have searched for that text, in the hope of trying it out. I have no idea when I first read these two books--but it was many years ago and they are just as fascinating today as they were then. I cannot recommend them too highly--but I must warn you, just as "Doctor Hudson" did, don't try to apply the power unless you are dead serious about it.

A Good Supplement/Appendix to "Magnificent Obsession"
A good follow-up/supplement to "Magnificent Obsession", in which this secret journal was oft referenced. While it's been many years since I read both books, I would definitely say that "Magnificent Obsession" is the better novel/read, and should absolutely be read before "Doctor Hudson's Secret Journal". "...Journal" is really a supplement or appendix to "Magnificent Obsession", and I didn't think it read well as a stand-alone novel. Both are from the period when doctors were held in extremely high esteem and deemed to be of the utmost high moral character, NOT the current steamy prime time soap operas. "Magnificent Obsession" is a morality play, and a book that might lead you to open the Bible if you haven't done so before...

It's a diary.
What can you expect from a diary -- a plot? I don't care. I've always loved Loyd Douglas because his social approach to the Christian faith intriques me. What if each one of us took one piece of the Sermon on the Mount and tried to live it? His ideas are just that simple and therefore just that more challenging.There is an interesting entry in the diary where he is discussing the "patriotic" fever before WW 1. It is so appropriate. I could hear the voices that I've heard for three years now about the war in Iraq. Some things never change.But Douglas was a person with a vision of living the Christian faith.

The most inspiring book I ever read.
A must-read for the true secret to a happy life. Incredibly inspiring book written just prior to WWII. The first book on the list I recommend to everyone to read. Right there with "Magnificent Obsession" by the same author (Lloyd C. Douglas).

Read this book whenI was a kid
I read this book as a kid and could not put it down. Even tried to put its mantra in action which is hard to do i.e. help somebody who needs help but tell no one about it. Good read!

For those who care about living a really GOOD life
Everyone who takes life seriously should read this; led to much self-examination and some changes in how I do things. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. There's a reason why this old book is still available for purchase!
