Sketching from the Imagination: Dark Arts

Love it!

As a guy that struggled to translate what's in my head onto a page, this book honestly helped me. Seeing the work that others have done, seeing how they overcame such struggles, it honestly helped me feel a lot more confident in my art. It also helped me discover other styles that I want to advance in.All in all. I would recommend this book to most if not all artists I know.

Depends what you want it for. Its not great for instruction. It doesnt aim to teach much in the way of drawing techniques. But if you want a book that can flick a creative switch in your brain, then this book can do that. Like all in this series, i have come to use them more to jog my own creative ideas than anything. And they are an invaluable resource for that. Seeing how other artists approach the subject is a good nudge when you are stuck on how to get your own ideas out of your head and down on paper.I will say though, if you are a beginner, there is a way of becoming confident with a pencil by copying; I am not advocating plagiarism here, but as you see students studying the masters in art galleries, it is a way of learning. You cant go far wrong with the artists included in this book. All are competent, visual story tellers.The whole series deal with the unreal, sci fi, monsters, and such. This is a reference guide to the sci fi/fantasy art made by others to help visualize your own creative compositions of the imaginary realms.

A compilation of multiple artists and their unique style of horror art. Great for inspiration and understanding an artists mindset.

Book is lovely, packaging wasn't good enough which meant corner of book was all bent. This is a gift for someone, hopefully they wont think its second hand. Please package better for your future customers. I think the book is also well written and tells you what techniques and materials artists use which is good.

The "Sketching from the Imagination" series covers many different different genres, but I thought I'd probably enjoy this book the most. I knew a few of the featured artists, so it sounded the most promising.I loved (most of) the art – from the quirky doodles to the fully rendered paintings, there's so much creative diversity to appreciate.There's "just enough" text giving a bit of background on individual artists' inspiration and process, but the artwork still dominates every page. I got ideas for techniques I haven't tried yet, and each time I flip through it my hands itch to go sketching.This is not an instructional book for beginners. There's no step-by-step drawings, nothing that will magically make you a better artist. It's really intended as a showcase of what is possible to achieve through (mostly) monochromatic sketching with different mediums.
