TROPICA - Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) - 20 SeedsWorth knowing: The impressive solitary plant is admired in every garden and park in the Mediterranean region. The attractive wood with its glossy green coloured leaves is able to grow to heights of 10 metres (which does, however, take several years). The very large, cream coloured, 20-30 cm large flowers appear the whole summer through. The fragrance is very discrete. Since this magnolia does keep its leaves in winter as well, it is also called the “evergreen magnolia“. Origin: The plant is widely spread. Originally from Florida, the Caribbean as well as southern Europe. Propagation: The seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. Propagation through seedlings is very difficult and lengthy. Although the seeds do germinate slowly, even hobby plant breeders will manage to see the plant growing after 2-3 months, given even moisture and warmth. Cultivation soil or coconut fibre is ideal as a sowing substratum. Place / Light: Bright to full sunny locations are what the large-flowered magnolias like best. Care: Always keep the humus-rich soil slightly moist and water a lot during summer (April – October), do, however, avoid waterlogging. Supply the plant with tub plant fertilizer every 2 weeks from April until August. Pests or diseases hardly ever occur. Seedlings will flower not until after a few years, the Magnolia grandiflora is an excellent cutting flower.Winter period: Being an evergreen plant, the magnolia should spend the winter in a bright position at 5°C. Slight frosts do not harm the plant. Above that, many Mediterranean plants tolerate cooler temperatures than suspected. Older magnolias are even able to spend the winter outside with or without being sheltered from frost.Bonsai Suitability: No
