I know that I will be revisiting this book often as I continue to try my best to teach writing well.
As I read this book, I could hear Ruth whispering in my ear, “You can do this! I’m here to help.”In Teach Writing Well, Ruth guides us in becoming more skilled (and efficient) in reading our students’ writing and showcases the importance of kids doing the same. Then, she shifts the focus to teaching the writer, honing in on of the toughest aspects - - revision. Here Ruth wisely reminds us, “The road to revision is paved with the traits.” She lays out a plan for integrating the key qualities of the traits into our whole class instruction throughout the year and creating great (and effective) writing lessons. Of course, one of my favorite parts was the section with books that mentor children in better understanding and applying the key qualities of each trait. Teach Writing Well is ideal for a book study, with compelling “Pause and Consider” points sprinkled throughout. I know that I will be revisiting this book often as I continue to try my best to teach writing well.

Ruth Culham has always been my author-mentor in the field ...
Ruth Culham has always been my author-mentor in the field of student writing: she has outdone herself in this new book. I work with children of all ages and was so excited to discover that Ruth was able to synthesize and apply her wealth of knowledge about student writing (and reading) to all ages. This is what I would call 'the work of a lifetime'. This is a book that will be a reference point on my bookshelf for many years to come. She identifies what she calls a lofty goal - to help each us - "be the teacher who influences students' perception of themselves as writers for the rest of their lives". She provides us with a roadmap of thoughtful strategies that are guaranteed to help us all get there.
