Well written Good beginner projects
I would say this is a good Pre Beginner book just to have some basic knowledge before even chucking up your first piece. The projects are decent beginner level, but if you attack them with only the instruction of each tool in the book you may get discouraged as the proper use of each tool is very condensed and rudimentary. Another book on actual tool use would be worthwhile before hitting the projects.

Learn to Turn
I just purchased a wood lathe and had never used one before. This book has made it easy to get started. It's very informative and eased any apprehension I may have had learning and using the tools.

Great Book
A very nice book for those just learning to turn wood with 12 very nice projects for beginners to do. I got this book for my grandson who has shown a great interest in turning wood. He really liked it. Went well with the wood lathe I got him for Christmas. He spends hours in the basement turning out pens, bowls, coasters, you name it. This book gave him some new ideas for projects. You wont go wrong presenting this to a budding wood turner.

This is a starter book for the turner with some experience looking for better results.
Guess I was expecting too much from this book. I liked it, nice pictures, but still not enough information for the beginner. The beginner should know that turning is very expensive, very very expensive. I own a lathe, started w/ a mini, burned that up, then a larger floor model. Turning tools, you need the equipment to sharpen them & you need to know how to sharpen them. The lathe can hurt you more so than any other power tool in your shop. You have to jnow how to hold the tool. Don't think that was clear enough. How do you gouge out a bowl? What is needed to do that operation. Most new turners don't know that the tool rest that came with the lathe is probably too big to gouge a bowl. The tail stock spindle isn't the right one or the right size. I haven't quite finished the book as yet & I also don't feel I am qualified to give allot of advice on a subject. My best advice is to seek out a class you can take. Find a work working club or turner club & seek instructions from them. To me there is no better lesson than OJT w/ a qualified instruction looking at what & how your doing. Also where do you get wood from? Should I get a chain saw too? What about a very large band saw to cut stock up to size. Like I said, very expensive hobby. However the book will get you started. So have fun & turn so you don't burn.

Bought it as a gift and it was well appreciated
My Dad recently bought a lathe so I searched for a book that would give him a mix of projects and as many beginner tips as possible. I was not disappointed, This book is excellent, it shows clear step by step photos of projects and has projects for beginner to intermediate level. I have yet to receive my Harry Potter Wand, so I am doubtful I will receive one of the more complicated boxes in this lifetime, but stlll, a appreciated gift :) Strongly recommend

Happy to turn
Een heel goed boekje om te starten met houtdraaien, je leert snel al de kneepjes van het vak. Het is ook nog eens heel leerzaam èn plezierig om te lezen. gewoon doen , krijg je geen spijt van.
