Can this cheese slicer cut slices from a large brick of cheese like the ones in a deli ?

Accepted Answer

No, the slicer is not wide enough. About the widest is a block of Velveta cheese and any deli cheese blocks that are around 3.5 inches.

This is a great cheese cutter, except the plastic wheel that holds and tighten the wire can not be replaced and the wires far outlast the plastic wheel. Had to buy a whole new cutter because the plastic wheel broke.

Can you purchase additional replacement wires in addition to the one included?

Yes, back in the "good old days" it actually was available from Amazon.  My call to OXO a couple of days ago however revealed the fact that they are no longer available.  So much for what used to be the best cheese slilcer on the market.

(I have used one of these - and I mean every day to slice cheese for sandwiches, etc. - and the wires seem to last about 3-5 smb control is.  Once they get VERY loose (more than 3mm sag at the middle) they are pretty much useless if you want to have any real control over the thickness of the slice you are cutting.s
I'm very sad about this: this was once the best cheese slicer I'd ever usssed.  Now it's an $18 toy which will be useless when the 3rd wire breaks - ssso in my case it will have a usable lifetime of less than a year.  I like it (and my lssast one lasted (as far as I can remember) at least 9-10 years and in that tissme went through about 39 replacement wires. Sigh.  The new one I bougssave a very short usage lifetime and after that will be a useless piece of junk.s

OXO, you have ruined an excellent product.  People will realize that thsey are paying a premium price for a product which will be of only temporary, short-term usage.  So much for the "genius" of your marketing department.

is this dishwasher safe?

It probably is. I wash mine by hand. It is the most sturdiest cheese cutter I've ever bought. We use it all the time. We were going through about 1 a month before I bought this one. It's great, trust me!

Question 4

does this work with soft cheeses? (stilton, roquefort, etc..)

Mine broke on hard cheese. So I would hope it would work on soft cheeses.
