A Really Useful Product for Phone Video Makers
I quite like Smallrig as their kit solves problems, is well made and is very good value. This little item is no exception. I love the feature of recent iPhones that allow high quality video to be recorded directly to an SSD drive. A 1 TB drive gives me two hours video without using my phone memory but I now have an expensive SSD hanging from an expensive phone by its cable. I have been looking for a simple solution to holding the SSD drive on my iPhone and had considered either an elastic band which would obscure the phone screen or glue a magnet to the drive which I would have to do on each drive. Then I saw a little magnetic bracket from another maker on Amazon which I ordered and it works. Then I saw this one and the price is so low it was worth doing a comparison. Both do the job, both are similar price but I think the Smallrig version has the edge as it is a little more versatile and adds a facility to lock the plug in place in the drive. It is also big enough to easily hold a small external battery instead of an SSD. Finally to another plus for other Smallrig users or those who wish to add an SSD to a camera. A small adapter allows the bracket to be fitted to a standard camera flash bracket so it sits perfectly on the top of my Smallrig phone frame which has a number of places where flash guns, mics and now SSD cards can be fitted. I noted on another review (a video one) that the bracket was given one star as the adapter got in the way when trying to fit the bracket to a phone. A quick Look at the sales page shows that the adapter is removed so the one star review did not stop me ordering. Removing the adapter involves pressing a button and takes about one second. The adapter could also be left on the frame or camera and the bracket taken off by just pressing the button. The adapter is defiantly a useful addition and not a feature that stops the adapter working as required. Final comment is that the bracket also comes with a self adhesive plate which can be stuck to a non magnetic phone or case. This is not the normal thin ring that tends to be supplied for this purpose but a complete circular plate. I note that others have used this to stick the bracket to a laptop. I can't imagine doing that but the option is there if required. The only minus point I see with this item is that compared with the other one I ordered it is a little heavier (steel rather than aluminium) and more bulky as this uses a large screw to hold the drive rather than the velcro strap on my other holder. Hard decision but I think I will favour this one as it is more versatile although slightly bulkier. Update. Although I still like this product I must admit that the bulk when compared with other solutions is becoming a minus point. The total height of the holder is 60 mm or nearly two and a half inches. If the Magmount option is used the "flash bracket" part can be removed which brings it down to 45 mm. That is still a lot on the top of an iPhone when there are other options which MagMount to my phone and hold the SSD just as securely but are only 8 mm deep and with my SSD on top have a total height of 18 mm. Much more pocket friendly. The Smallrig option is worth considering if the SSD is to be mounted on a Smallrig phone frame but if the SSD is to be mounted on the back of a phone other options do the job just as well and the phone can still be carried comfortably in the pocket.

Brilliant but heavy!
This Smallrig SSD clamp appears to be made out of steel, as a result it’s quite heavy weighing 4.5 ounces on my kitchen scales. The clamp comprises the clamp itself, a small self adhesive metal ring and a detachable cold shoe mount. The fit and finish of the components is excellent and very well thought out. The clamp features a compression gate to secure a USB C cable to the SSD which works well. The only criticisms I have are the weight and the black paint finish which chips off all too easily. However, from a utilitarian aspect there really isn’t anything else that compares. Recommended! 👍

Versatile and robust
This is a well designed little gadget that has a premium high quality feel about it. I’m a big big fan of the small clamp to hold the cable in place - most SSD failures for me are due to the cable or socket becoming worn or loose. As others noted it’s heavy for its size, but not as heavy as you might think, especially when the hot shoe mount is removed. The solidity of the frame means that it won’t bend and damage drive casing in case of a drop, but rather add a layer of protection. Some reviewers noted that it’s bulkier and bigger than it needs to be for an SSD, but I think this extra room allows it to potentially accommodate the bulkier ‘rugged’ SSD drives or a HDD or, as some noted, an external charger or battery pack just as well. The bolt that tightens to hold the SSD in place has a very durable feeling rubber ending, which has some give, so you don’t need to worry about scratching or things loosening and falling out. The Magsafe magnet and anchor for it are very strong - it feels like this could support quite a bit of weight. It was so solidly attached when it arrived in fact that I was initially confused and didn’t realise the anchor plate is magnetic and detaches. In case this helps: the magnetised part is on the frame itself, not the detachable anchor plate/ring. It’s not however like the magnets in MagSafe which only stick to certain surfaces, but a regular magnet that attaches to any number of metal surfaces. A pro and a con. The magnet sticks VERY strongly to the included plate. As I plan to attach the mount to my MacBook, I’m probably gonna use a more “flimsy” third party anchor ring to make potential removal easier and make it less conspicuous. Improvements that would make it a 5/5 for me: 1. Spare anchor attachment plate/ring 2. An integrated plastic tab on the anchor plate to make potential removal easier (I’ve had plates before where such a tab was part of the sticker) Overall a good, versatile and quality product that covers a lot of different use cases. Great find.

not long enough for its recommended ssd's, covers main camera lens
Why is no one talking about the fact that with the 17 pro if you u se a sandisk extreme ssd or t7 shield (as listed in the description) will cover the edge of the main lens?! it literally gets in the way of the shot and you have a dark patch to on the side of your photos and videos. You need to have it at an angle for it work, making the entire device at the bottom to hold the cable straight entirely redundant lol. they could have made it longer or removed the cable-clamping device which takes up a cm of travel (the handle on my cable clamp bent from its first drop anyways, so it cant be extended properly)

Pretty awesome bit of kit
I had never seen anything like the '#SMALLRIG SSD Holder 2-in-1 SSD Mount Bracket for MagSafe with Cold Shoe Cable Clamp' or even knew of it's existence and finding this has been a bit of a godsend. I like to do night photography and though I have decent SD cards I prefer using my SSD which up to now has been attached using the tape to the side of the camera method. Though this has been mostly successful it hasn't always been and there is nothing more frustrating than having a star-tracking setup disrupted because of something as silly as masking tape failing is very frustrating my Vixen Polarie is a little fussy to set up so not having to touch it too much is a blessing. The manufacturing and engineering quality of the bracket is just excellent, the SSD clamp is firm and the USB cable clamp grips very tightly - once in this is not going anywhere. The hot shoe mount fits like a glove and once on there is zero movement at all even while rotating the camera. Though I haven't tried the mag-safe ring in anger it is very strong and this bracket comes with a stick on piece to make any device mag-safe compatible. A price of £30.90 is really good in my opinion. For those of us with the Samsung T7 or similar SDDs (and tbh I think it will easily hold any similar sized SSDs with a central USB port) then this is a decent accessory to have. I didn't know it existed before ordering but I am really glad to have it around now.

Well built Phone mount bracket
This mounting bracket that attaches to your iPhone or Samsung device is very well built in metal and has rubber padding in all the right places for protecting your phone when being used. I have been using this for my storage device which attaches inside the bracket and makes using it less cumbersome when attaching it to my phone when out and about. There are multiple adjustments on the bracket for securing it in place even including the cable hole. The main loop on the bracket is Magsafe compatible and comes with its own stick on pad should you wish to use it. Overall this bracket has been well thought out and feels well built for attaching your storage device.
