Great story, great price blu-ray
I loved the TV series back in the day, and fancied the DVD set, but it didn't have subtitles, and I'm getting a bit harder of hearing these days. So I was really pleased to see this bluray set at a good price, and with subs! Although it's from America, it's region-free and plays perfectly in my Region 2/B player. I do have a 1080p HD TV, and the players is connected via HDMI, but I'm not fussy enough or knowlegeable enough to prattle on about the relative quality of the blu-ray images - I have a cheapo Phillips player, it's the only blu-ray player I've had, and I haven't seen the DVD version of the film to make comparisons with: but I was perfectly happy with it, the picture was very clear and detailed. As for the film itself, it's a lovely poignant story about the changing west, a cattle drive, the hazards encountered, death in various forms, love and loss, friendship, honour, compassion, loyalty, and lots of other things. The scenery is epic, as you'd expect, and Robert Duvall in particular is epic too, in the complexity of his character: Tommy Lee Jones, fine actor though he is, is definitely second fiddle here. A host of quality support players including Danny Glover, Robert Urich, Anjelica Huston, and Diane Lane underline the sheer quality of it all. My only diappointment was when it finished....If you like westerns, buy this, it is a classic. And, if you haven't already, get Open Range, where Duvall reprises this grizzled but wise old galoot in a performance of similar quality.

Not your average Western
What a great film. It's not what you'd call a typical western, but it's got a bit of everything. Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall play a couple of old, retired Texas Rangers who decide to make a last long journey away from the dusty, two-horse town where they've settled, and drive a herd of cattle and horses north and west where they've heard there's good grazing land and money to be made. They end up with an eclectic mix of drivers, cooks, cowhands, ex-soldiers and a pretty girl, and the story follows them as they trek across the US, haunted by renegade Indians, chasing bandits and dealing with the internal squabbles and relationships of the group. I don't want to give away any of the story, but the relationship between Duvall and Jones holds it all together, as we gradually learn about their past, and their life-long friendship. There are a number of other sub-plots interwoven with the main theme as well. Tommy Lee Jones is superb as the hard, grumpy, private, driven leader of the group, but for me Robert Duvall tops it with a performance that has everything that he brings to just about any role he plays: quiet confidence, gentle humour, great feeling and real depth. I remember seeing this on TV when it first came out as a mini-series, and it was good. But I didn't realise how good until I bought it and watched it recently. If you're after an all-action thriller then maybe it's not for you. But if you want a warm, thoughtful, sometimes humorous, sometimes sad, occasionally violent but overall heart-warming and enjoyable film, you might just enjoy this one.

No complaints here!
I’ve only knocked it down one star because of the picture quality, it could be slightly better in my opinion. On saying that it’s ok and the dvd itself is good for the price.

One of the best ever Westerns
Lonesome Dove escorts you back to the REAL Old West and helped by the all-star cast, this is a SUPERB story. You join the story as Woodrow (Lee Jones) decides there is better ranching country up in Montana and along with his best mate, Gus (Duvall) and their crew, they drive the cattle all the way from Texas. Lonesome Dove is a rollercoaster journey - the adaptation from the book written by Larry McMurtry is top rate and you fall in love with all the characters, sharing their highs, lows, dramas and fun. I have to say this is one of the few mini-series I have watched again and again and again. At 6 hours - it is long but well worth it. To me this ranks alongside Dances With Wolves and Open Range as showing the REAL Old West. And I defy anyone not to cry at the end...

Love the story with the cast doing a fantastic job ...
Love the story with the cast doing a fantastic job so how can you not love this show. The movie may be too long and carried over a few disc but in the long term they put the point over and there was suspense with heart felt moments and never boring so I rated this an A grade plus for sheer full on entertainment from beginning to end keeping you thinking what's next around the corner. Now it's not fast pace action or killing everywhere but a movie that will intrigue. Telling a life of the early era and hardships that you can relate to not overdone. Now it's pleasure time well earned so what are you waiting for, pick up the show and don't forget the popcorn that is most wanted and relax with feet up to a brilliant night in with fabulous entertainment worth waiting for. Enjoy!

BEWARE!!
I bought this DVD thinking we could play it by changing the region format on our Mac PC (us being in the UK) . We have done this before with success. Not this time. The dvd reader will not even recognise it, and rejects it. We have not been able to watch it, AND IT WASN'T CHEAP! Seller said to return it but WE PAY THE POSTAGE to the US!

This is a masterpiece. . . .you'll find it to be the best class Western but MORE!
This started a a TV miniseries in 1989 and I & America were in love with it!!! Based on Larry McMurtry Pulitzer Prize Book of the same name. You get drawn in from the beginning and you just want to keep watching forever. The Stars of this were the A-Team of acting: Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Diane Lane, Angelica Huston, Danny Glover, Frederick Forrest, Danny Glover and Robert Urich and more great ones. Their characters felt like we were with them thru a very long journey from Texas to Montana. I think it's the most rewarding pic I ever seen & will re-watch yearly as they're like family. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Delivered on time & the playing of it, well, was not quite as clear. I'm keeping it, though.

Classic Western TV mini-series.
My wife and I watched every version of this story. The currently reviewed version and all the sequels and prequels. What a great series! Of course, the original version is the best with Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. It really moved us emotionally. Aside from all the action, including horse-wrangling, cattle drives, Indian attacks, etc., there was an underlying passionate human interest aspect to it that really moved us. It's one of those shows that stays with you for many years. Highly recommended!
