Can these be used to build a brick bbq in the average back garden?

That is the reason we bought them and yes they used them to build the housing for the BBC in the garden.

are they solid or purforated

They are perforated with 3 large holes from top to bottom. This reduces weight but does not appear to impact on strength. I have used them in the garden for edging the lawn, creating steps etc - so far, so good.
