Wonderful; Outrageous; Strange; Thoroughly Entertaining!
I bought this On 5/2/2016 - and here I am reviewing it three days later. I think that the expression is: "I couldn't put it down."Insect Farm is as strange, weird and wonderfully bizarre as they get! And I really enjoy strange and bizarre, but it is a rare author that can produce a book like this.Although it was creepy and dark, the "voice" was not depressing-dark; it was almost humorous at some points. And I am still thinking about this subtle twist on "Of Mice and Men." So fascinating! As other reviewers have said, the two main characters are Jonathan (the first person narrator) and his brother Roger, who has the intellect of an 8-year old. The two brothers are beyond close to each other; there is a strong and loving bond between them. Roger's hobby is his "Insect Farm" - a project that has him cultivating various insects - Oh - I can't even begin to describe the insect farm; it takes the talent of Mr. Prebble to do it justice. This story is outrageous in a way, but totally entertaining. What a terrific time I had for the past two days! Don't MISS this!

Different
I bought this book when kindle put it on sale. I did not want to pay full price because the reviews were mixed. But I have to say, it was good. It was something different to read other than the same old stories out there. The only criticism I have, are the descriptions of Harriet were a little long winded. I think I got the idea that Harriet was beautiful within a few pages. In my opinion, that part went on and on.I do recommend this book very interesting.

worth a read if you can get a used copy
a fun, suspenseful read, but not one I would pay full price for. I disliked the ending, but I enjoyed the book overall. a great vacation read!

I bought this book for my 12 year old daughter who love love loves to read. She read this book in less than 24 hours. She absolutely loved this book and the story line. She loved it so much that I had to sit down as she retold me the entire story. Hope you enjoy it as much as she did!

Real passion and heart
Loved this book. Gets you thinking of the psyche behind each character, why do they make the decisions they do.There is love, obsession, autism, jeasouly, the stuggle of evryday life... this book has heart and passion. it was a great book club discussion.

Not so hot.
This books just seemed to be words strung together. The story line does not flow well. Could not get immersed in the story.

Epic Fail
I'm not going to waste my time repeating what's already been said in other reviews regarding the storyline itself but will instead concentrate on highlighting what I didn't like about this book.I don't usually go for crime novels or thrillers because they're usually poorly written and lack characters with real depth. This is certainly true of 'The Insect Farm,' a novel I knew would disappoint as soon as I started reading it. However, I assumed, having read reviews here, that the story itself must be good enough to excuse the poor prose (really, it's dire). Unfortunately it isn't and I've wasted hours of my time confirming that.Where to start... I was unable to connect with any of the characters. Nothing about them felt genuine; little of their dialogue rang true, and the narrator never came to life. I feel it was pretentiously written and think it requires serious editing to remove repetitions, clumsy metaphors and awkward phrasing, and to generally condense the text which uses many words to say very little. It just went on and on; I ended up speed-reading the second half in order to write a review warning others not to waster their time or money.Basically, the author has attempted to combine a pretty crappy crime story with serious literature but failed miserably because he simply isn't good enough a writer. He failed to make me believe in anyone so I naturally falied to care about what happened to any of them. As a result, the twist was completely unexciting. My reaction: so what? I also felt the ending and, therefore, also the prologue were added as an afterthought to spice things up and justify the intriguing title. Please don't waste your time or money on this drivel. Try 'The Enchanted' by Rene Denfeld instead. It's a real work of art.1.5 Stars

Guresome is as gruesome does.
This was a gruesome story about two very different men. One has learning disabilities, and the other, his older brother is reduced to looking after him, after the death of their parents. The disabled one has a shed full of insects which he studies very carefully, whilst his brother tries to maintain a long-distance relationship with his girlfriend who is still at university. When she is murdered, the normal brother thinks he did it, but nothing could be further from the truth. A very gruesome ending to the story.
