Not as bad as some of the reviews suggest!
I carried out lots of inquiries from different phone shops concerning the nokia N97, unfortunately none of them has better review about this phone. All seem to be negative.I remember some guy from an orange shop refering to the N97 as'rubbish' when I mentioned N97, did'nt even finish my sentence.Adamant not to subscribe to the Snobby Iphone niche nonesense, wanted an alternative that can challenge apple so-call 3gs. bought the Nokia n97. On trying to familiarise myself with the features, experienced virtually all the Negative reviews posted. i.e the freezing mid way through application and switching off and rebooting.Nokia is renowned for their sophistication and craftmanship in mobile phone market. How did they get this wrong? well I suppose, in trying to stop the Iphone from market dominance, the N97 was launched too soon without proper testing.(emphasis is mine)Nokia has dedicated a special hotline to solve the N97 glitch. ring up and get instructions on how to update the device from the present version. alternatively insert the Ovi cd, connect the device and update.I have not experience any problem whatsoever since updating to software version v11.0.021. The N97 is a good buy.

Simple but Good
This is a phone and not a plaything. It is the best smart phone I have owned. It is easy to use and, more importantly, communicates quickly, directly to my PC. It is also a sensible size.

DON'T BE A FOOL LIKE I WAS!!
Avoid, avoid, avoid!! THE WORST PHONE EVER!! As others have said and rightly so, "good on paper" but an absolute abortion of a phone in reality. Nokia aught to be ashamed of themselves for this festering turd of a contraption, I honestly don't know how it even made it onto the market, problem after problem after problem! Do yourself a favour and buy a different phone, any phone!! Save yourself the stress, frustration and the money!! Thankfully mine is long gone now as I got so annoyed with it turning itself off one day that I threw it on the ground and smashed it into pieces, I didn't stop there though, oh no, after all the bother it had caused me, I stamped on it over and over like stewie from family guy does on the 'bird' record!! Seriously, DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another Nokia with outdated hardware
I had my Nokia from the day it came out back in June 09, and have recently departed with it due to my endless frustration with the phone.Instead of rambling about it, I'll start with the positives. The N97 is a pretty good looking phone, and comes with some impressive hardware - the 32GB storage is great, and the 5MP camera was pretty good too. The keyboard, while not perfect, was really good for typing on, and once you get used to it, is much faster than regular or virtual keypads.Unfotunately, this is where the positives end.My biggest gripes with the phone are the ancient ARM11 CPU, the distinct lack of RAM and no GPU whatsoever. Considering this is Nokia's flagship for 2009, it's specs were much worse than the (rather amazing) N95, which was released two years previous. In day to day terms, my N97 lacked the grunt to impress me, and applications were sluggish and often closed due to the phone not having enough memory. The main offender was the web browser, which would just simply give up and crash whenever you wanted to load an image, or memory heavy. The ARM11 CPU (which can be found in much cheaper, older phones) couldn't cope with what was being asked for it. The lack of a graphical processor meant that games and other apps looked pretty rubbish, and were often very laggy. The N97 is based on Nokia's beloved S60 platform, and quite honestly, isn't well suited for touch input. The whole interface is boring, and laggy, and offers no eye candy or any special effects (probably due to hardware limitations). When I had my N97, S60 was extremely buggy, and although it didn't crash, it was quite unstable and ugly - loading different things up meant that different parts of the OS would load over other bits, and it looked very messy; almost unfinished. The last straw came when my touchscreen broke. Over time, the screen had developed a large bright white area in the biddle of the screen, and around the edges, it darkened, until the screen would no longer respond to touch (my guess is the resistive layer came off).I wouldn't recommend anyone get this phone. It's too expensive, and compared to other smartphones of 2009/10, it's seriously lacking in some areas. If you are still interested in it, I would suggest looking at the Nokia 5800 (almost identital, but a lot cheaper) or Nokia's latest phone, the N900.As for me, I won't be returning to Nokia until they stop producing new phones with old hardware.

The N97... the night bus? No! the iphone killer!
I can never go back to a normal phone with buttons ever again. I caught myself touching the screen of my laptop and thinking reflections in the bus windows were zoomable.I have been using the N95 8 gig and thought I would want for nothing else. But the extra storage space better net experiance and the touch screen have elevated this phone to a new level. It can even broadcast to a fm radio which saves on wires when connecting it to a car audio system. It does have some small software issues and the iphone has got more apps. But I expect this to be ironed out by nokia and the programer community in the near future.A Major waypoint in the story of mobile multimedia.hassan
