Great Coffee maker, especially for the price
I bought this Black & Decker coffee maker a couple months ago, when the one we got for a wedding gift 12 years ago stopped working. The price on this coffee maker was so good that I thought for sure that it would have issues, but it has worked flawlessly since we have owned it. Coffee makers have changed a bit in the last 12 years so we were unable to find one for a half descent price that allows you to take off and clean in your dishwasher the entire compartment that holds the coffee grounds. This coffee maker, as well as many of the others, has a compartment within the coffee maker that can be removed and cleaned but we feared that the water level would exceed the height of the compartment and stain the inside of the coffee maker. We were pleased to find that our fears were unfounded and this hasn't happed, at all. It looks like the water level stays well below the top of the internal compartment so there is really no risk of the internals getting stained. As far as performance goes, this coffee maker works very well. There have been no overflow or coffee pot alignment issues, as I've seen with other coffee makers and the water inflow shuts off completely when you remove the coffee pot it the middle of a brew cycle. We have a similar looking Mr. Coffee model at work and the water inflow on that one doesn't shut off right away when you remove the coffee pot. The one at work it is messy and the burner is stained from all the coffee that has poured onto it. The coffee pot itself pours well without spilling around the poor spout when you pour a cup of coffee and it holds a nice amount of coffee however we were/are a little confused about the fact that there are two lines at different dup markings, instead of one. We have picked the one that we think is the right one to use when we fill the coffee pot but are still unclear why there are two markings. The ratio of coffee to water is an inexact science anyway so this hasn't been a real issue. One change that would be nice but would probably increase the price is if B&D could add a batter back up for the clock. We frequently unplug out coffee maker when it is not in use and we have to enter in the time every time we plug it back in. The clock is very easy to set but we have just given up on setting the clock because we don't really need that feature. Over all this coffee maker is really nice and works very well, especially for the price, so I am giving it a 5 star rating.

Thank God this model still exists!
EDIT, 11/21/12: turns out this newer edition of the same model doesn't work well with the mesh filter basket you can find in grocery stores to avoid buying paper filters. EXCEPTION: if you get the mesh basket which is also meshed at the BOTTOM (not a solid plastic bottom), you'll be fine. It also doesn't work well with commercial paper filters. The problem in each case, is that the water doesn't flow fast enough, so the filter's reservoir fills up. It's not happened yet, but presumably that filling-up will eventually backflow to the section where you pour in the water, and clog up the water pipe. Yet if I use a plain paper towel in lieu of a filter (shaping it as I stuff it into the filter bowl) -- that DOES work, and remarkably well. I buy paper towel rolls with some moniker like 'select-a-sheet', perforated at half-sheets rather than whole ones. The half-sheet works nicely. End edit; original review follows below the ---- marks. -------------------- I am just now buying this at Amazon, to replace this SAME MODEL which I bought four years ago from Walmart, in 2008. It is no longer sold there. I think I paid only $20 back then, and it makes sense that this model is now a tad more expensive. WORTH IT. Here's why: 1. If you clean it with vinegar regularly (at least once a month, run vinegar through it instead of coffee, followed by another full pot's worth of water) -- it makes good coffee, right on time. 2. Compact, open design. So unlike those fancy closed designs which only cost you time. 3. Dependable, works as you want it to. Yes, you can program the timer. When electricity goes out, it's easily resettable. 4. See-through water window, on the right (with the coffeemaker facing you). 5. Easiest and most cleanable model I've yet seen. 6. Temperature is good for keeping hot, 2 hour shut off. Just make sure the carafe is fully on the plate. 7. The plate has cheap teflon coating, so be careful not to clean with anything but a paper towel. When the coating wears off, it doesn't cause a problem. 8. As with any other carafe, don't pour quickly when the pot is full. The lips aren't crafted sharply enough, so they 'dribble' with a full pot. Best kind of carafe has a pouty POINTY spout, like the worm's mouth in the movie Dune (beginning, when visiting the Emperor). UPDATE 9/28/12: the newer version of this model -- which I just got from Amazon yesterday -- is better than what I had. The carafe is slightly taller and slimmer, and the lip is less prone to dripping when full. Very happy camper, moi. 9. Takes a standard basket filter, whether paper or mesh. I prefer the mesh. The mesh basket filters you can buy in a grocery store, fit. I like to use three measures of coffee into the basket filter, and a goodly sprinkling of cinnamon on top, to make coffee. You can easily clean the mesh filter by dumping it into the clean liner portion of a trash can by whacking the filter's sides; then, just rinse out the residue in the NON-garbage-disposal side of the sink. (Never run coffee grounds through a garbage disposal.) Mesh filter can last you several years, if you treat it well. It also will go in the dishwasher top rack, as well as the provided filter basket holder. Every month or so, use a toothbrush to clean the interior of the basket holder, before putting it in the diswasher, in order to clean off the coffee oil. (I had neglected to do that, too.) But, I didn't clean it. I didn't follow step 1 for over a year. We have VERY hard water here in Houston, and until this morning, the champ kept on putting out coffee; until the last few days I noticed it took 20 minutes to brew a pot. Only THEN did I pay attention to the fact I'd not cleaned it by running a pot through with vinegar. So, it clogged up. You would be disgusted if you saw how scaled over it is with the hard water salts. I was VERY negligent. So, now I buy it with Prime, today! So now I have a spare carafe and filter holder, hooray! And this time, I'll take better care of it!!

My favorite coffeemaker
After several other popular brands of 12 cup programmable coffeemakers failed to live up to my expectations, I decided to try a brand I had only associated with power tools. Black and Decker make good tools and they make the easiest to use coffeemaker I've ever owned. This is very simple to program, the LED clock stays lighted all the time, the lid closes tightly keeping steam from escaping to damage wood cabinets, the water window is large and easy to read, the cord is fairly short and can be pushed out of sight in the back of the case, and it makes a great cup of coffee. The price was good at $29.99, and, if it will just last a long time, it may well turn out to be my favorite coffeemaker of all! It's available in black or white to suit your decor and does not hog counter space, so is great for small kitchens. I've had mine for about 6 weeks and really have no complaints.

I Got More Than I Paid For With This Coffeemaker
At half price of 15 dollars this coffee maker did everything it was advertised to do and did it well. There was one small drop of coffee emitted when the pause and serve feature was activated but no more after that. The buttons are easy to operated and logical and the water reservoir is large so that filling is not an obstacle. This Black and Decker replaced one of it's predecessors which also worked well and was long lived. The carafe may be a little thinner than some but seems sturdy enough to serve many a pot of coffee. Cleans easily. For the price, I am sorry I did not buy two.

Simple, reliable, easy to use coffee maker.
I think this coffee maker is just fantastic! If your looking for a coffee maker that makes just a perfect "cafe like" cup of coffee then you should probably be looking at the more expensive brands. But this basic coffee maker really can't be beat. It does what its supposed to do, I am not a picky coffee person and just drink plain old Folgers and this coffee maker brews it fast (less than 5 min even at 12 cups of water) and if you just can't wait that long it has a sneak-a-sip feature that pauses the brewing for 30seconds so you can pour yourself a cup. Pretty much everything is made of plastic on this machine, except for the glass kettle. I didn't even have to open up the manual to get it started, that is how easy it is. Just plug it in, and there is a big power button to start brewing, buttons for changing the time. No gimmicks, no messy confusion, just simple and basic. To clean it out it says to use vinegar and water about monthly to prevent clogging. Dimensions Height: about 18inches tall with lid closed and about 23.5inches tall with lid open at its highest point Width: about 8.5 - 9inches at its widest point Can make 4-12 cups with ease If your just looking for a coffee machine that makes plain ol' drip fast then this is it and it's affordable.

Excellent coffee maker
My old Black & Decker coffee maker just started to go and I knew it was another Black & Decker I wanted. The previous one lasted 10 years - amazing. I am very pleased with this 12 cup coffeemaker. it is very similar to my old one and works just as good. The water gauge on the side that shows how many cups of water you are adding is very easy to see and I have made coffee from 3 cups to a full 12 cups and it always brewed perfectly. The warming plate keeps the coffee nice and hot. There is honestly nothing negative I can say about this coffee maker. The plastic filter inside in which you insert the paper filter is also very easy to take out and keep clean. This unit is also very attractive. From a user who makes coffee with it once or sometimes twice every day I highly recommend the Black & decker DLX1050 coffee maker.

Key Pad Died After 10 Days, BUT........
Well, the title says it all, and if you read the other negative reviews here, you will see that the product is unreliable junk! BUT, now get this! I have just reordered two more of the same product!!!!! See following for my apparent idiocy! Before I get to that, I am shipping this junk back to Amazon for refund, but since I have thrown out the original packaging, refund may be denied. I keep packaging on all electronics and any products sold for over a $100 from Amazon and all other sources, but despite the negative reviews here posted, and since I have never had any coffee pot fail, (including four by Black and Decker), I made the mistake of trusting that the junk would last at least a while longer than 10 days. Now, as to an explanation as to why in the world I have ordered TWO more of this product (one to use, and a second as a spare)! First, I love the product (except for its abject failure this morning at 3:30 am), in terms of the reliability similar ones have always shown in the past, in terms of the way it brews, in terms of the ease of loading and cleaning it, and finally, in terms of certain of its features, such as the much smaller liklihood (compared to many of its competitors) that the pot spout will dribble all over when pouring, the auto shut off, and the stop of drip when carafe is momentarily withdrawn to pour (the new design of this B&D is superior to that of previous models in providing a much more reliable mechanisim on the pot lid and the bottom of the drip container for momentarily shutting off the drip when the carafe is withdrawn). Second, the taste of the coffee produced is something I like much more than any other auto coffee maker out there (I've tried nine over the years); I imagine that the flavor differences which can be introduced by any auto coffee maker are primarily a result of the combination of three variables - the temperature, dispersion pattern, and the speed of flow of the hot water spray over the drip container. Third, based upon what Amazon customers have written here in their review of coffee makers (at least when there is more than just one review!), THERE ARE NO RELIABLE COFFEE MAKERS ON THE MARKET!!! Soooo, I thought I'd choose one piece of junk whose result I liked best when it was working! Yes, I know that there are certainly some that according to the pattern of reviews are likely to be more reliable. Finally, as is the case with many other Amazon customers, I would not order any product without first reading the reviews here. And by the way, have you read the reviews of some of the products, such as automatic tea brewers or toasters - if you have, you wouldn't purchase any, because of the decided danger of fire with most! So, if you value your home and your life, and the lives of your family, remove yourself from the buying public!

Got a 2nd for spare
I've had a Bunn, Cuisinart, and all sorts of expensive coffeemakers after my old Braun died and haven't found a good one till this cheapy! Amazing. It brews a nice hot cup of coffee and the quality/flavor is EXCELLENT! I used the 1st one for about 4 weeks and decided to buy a 2nd one for the day the 1st dies, but what i did is to clean and dry out the 1st one which proved to work well,it's now the spare for later and i've been using the 2nd one which also works perfectly and has been for a few months now. No leaks - no problems, it just makes a great cup of coffee. Actually, all my old makers used the #4 cone filters so being i had an abundance of those i use it into this one and put grinds in that. Works great so i keep doing it and getting paper cone filters. Regular basket type need more coffee grinds so it saves me $ to use the cone type. They stick up a bit but the lid squished it down and it's never folded over or anything, just makes GREAT coffee! :)
