GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON WIDE-RANGING TOPICS IN GRAPHIC FORM MAKES FOR FASCINATING VIEWING
An extremely valuable volume of maps on a wide range of subjects, stretching from the highly contentious nuclear energy and renewables to such restful topics as peacefulness and happiness, all set within a global context, New Views: The World Mapped Like Never Before should prove to be an insightful source of information for a wide diversity of readers. As such, all public libraries across the globe would benefit from making the work available to both students and members of the general public. The full-page color reproductions of global maps should provide enough mental stimulation to excite any active and inquiring mind. Being multi-focused, New Views should also encourage any specialist who consults these pages to venture outside the bounds of their own narrow sphere of interest into realms that perhaps even boggle the imagination. In short, the pages of this quarto book are worth delving into across a spectrum of concerns. The actual physicality of the text seems to bring the world into one’s grasp in a much more meaningful way than if one were to try searching for these maps on the internet. The knowledge of the compiler of this collection, Alistair Bonnett, who is Professor of Social Geography at Newcastle University, shows off his academic background in the liveliest of ways. With his previous works including Off the Map, What is Geography? (ironical as the title might seem in the current context) and How to Argue, among others, he clearly has a lively mind that finds many different aspects of his key subject intriguing, and, what’s even better, is that he is able to convey his enthusiasm for cartography to an audience that should be equally intellectually informed and sensually aroused with a sense of wonder by the amount of factual detail that is presented in such an accessible graphic form. Not relying purely on the illustrative nature of New Views, each of the fifty maps is accompanied by pages of text highlighting the key points of the map concerned. Despite his academic nature, Bonnett writes in a style that should be understandable across the age groups. The lack of obtuseness and abstruseness in the test shows that he is an effective communicator of ideas that stretch far beyond the geographic realm, into the realm of philosophy and religion—no wonder that two of his foci are linguistic and religious diversity. In short, this is an epic work that should receive substantial recognition across the board.

50 stunning world maps!
Are you a mapaholic? Do you just love to scrutinize maps? If so, I've got the book for you.In 2018, Alastair Bonnett released New Views: The World Mapped Like Never Before: 50 maps of our physical, cultural and political world.I adore maps and I soaked up all 50 maps. It's not available as an ebook, which is fine since the colorful book is designed to be flipped through, touched, and examined.I've included some sample maps on my website.VERDICT: 10/10 stars

"Give me an atlas over a guidebook any day."
The visual representation of data is an exciting and fascinating field, and we've come a long way from simple bar graphs and Venn diagrams. This book focuses on issues of global consequence, and does so by presenting fifty world maps, each drawn to illustrate a set of facts, observations, principles or data regarding a single topic.Roughly organized among "Land, Air and Sea", "Human and Animal", and "Globalization", the topics range from distribution of ocean garbage to gasoline prices, to patterns of emigration, to religious diversity, to the world nut trade. The point of each map, of course, is to emphasize global connectedness as much as to provide information, and in this it succeeds remarkably well. There is much to consider here; it is a visual treat and a change of perspective for those of us who enjoy pouring over lists and collections of factoids. Each map is accompanied by a narrative section that identifies the source of the data and that draws the reader's attention to highlights and connections of note. The maps vary, as one might expect, in what you might call "confidence" or "hardness". A map of, say, asteroid strikes or global distribution of fast food franchises is based on hard observational data. A map of "vulnerability to natural disasters" takes into account attitudes toward emergency preparedness and the robustness of infrastructure and emergency planning, and is much more subjective. So, some of these maps have to be viewed with some reserve. That said, it never hurts to know as much as you can about home, and this is home writ large. There is much to see here, and much to suggest further inquiry and investigation. This was an intriguing and worthy find. (Check out "Pangea Ultima", a geoprediction of the future of continental drift, and another one - an eye opening map of undersea communications cables.)(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Gain Many New Perspectives of the Planet
This gorgeous coffee table book provides the reader with a multitude of new ways to look at our amazing planet by mapping the world according to criteria far beyond traditional boundaries, states, countries and streets. You will see maps that demonstrate air pollution levels around the world, air traffic patterns, areas of most dense congestion of rubbish in ocean waters, changes in precipitation, wildlife habitats and per capita gun ownership. This book is a colorful, creative and thought provoking reminder that we are all living aboard planet Earth and that what happens in just one world locale is interconnected to all other locations.

Pretty, but flawed
Very nice book of maps showing world stats, the only problem was that the images are split along the left and right page, and the split happens right through Europe, which has the highest density of little countries, so you miss a lot

Sehr sehr geniales Buch....
