One Incredible Bargain!
Purchased this model from Costco for $300. What you get is a Sellita 200-1 movement, sapphire crystal, 60-click bezel, and a nice NATO strap. This is already a pretty good deal at the price point, as most microbrand watches at this (and even higher) price points use the Seiko 4R36/NH35 movement while with the Combat Sub you're getting a Swiss Sellita movement. The Sellita 200-1, and the ETA 2824 it's based off of, are used in a lot of pretty expensive watches (Tudor Black Bay, anyone?).Where the Combat Sub steps away from the pack is its case. At just over 11mm, i's one of the thinnest automatic divers around and wearing it is totally unlike wearing some of the big "hockey puck" divers. The lume is ok- not Seiko quality, but pretty good. Fit and finish is excellent.Where the rubber meets the road: I bought a Strapcode Super-O oyster band from Amazon for just under $60 and in looks and comfort the combination is phenomenal. If you want to see for yourself go to the Amazon page for that band, there are several pictures of other shoppers' Combat Subs.As far as accuracy: I have several automatic watches both with the 4R36 and the nonbranded NH35 movement. They tend to run 3-4 minutes slow a week. Even my MIJ Turtle runs about 2-3 minutes a week slow. The Sub runs about 35 SECONDS a week fast. That's awesome.Update: over the most recent stretch, im running about 25 seconds fast over 15 days. The downside? Well, out of preference I wish they'd used a ceramic bezel insert rather than an aluminum one. Also while you can handwind a Sellita movement it's not a really great idea; see the article and discussion at CaliberCorner.com for more info. This isn't really a heartbreaker as you can just gently rotate the watch for a few minutes to spin the counterweight, but it's worth knowing. On the gripping hand, for less than $100 more than a Seiko 5 SRPD you're getting thin, Swiss, and sapphire. There may have been better bargains since the Louisiana Purchase, but not that many.
