Excellent for the price
This thermometer does its job, not without problems but certainly at a level that's tremendous relative to its cost. Its temperature assessment is quick and accurate. That is the fundamental thing a thermometer is supposed to do, and this one does it well. The display is large and easy to read. I have neither over- nor undercooked a single piece of meat since I purchased the it, which is as strong an endorsement as anyone should need.My gripes are all shape related: the shape of the head and size/placement of the buttons. As a man with fairly large hands, the smooth, curved rear of the thermometer head is not easy to grip, especially if it is damp from oil spatters or steam, and the tiny buttons aren't easy to press. Some kind of grippy surface on the back and larger, better spaced buttons would get it a perfect score.Overall, I'm satisfied that I got a good value for the price.

Good thermometer
Good thermometer. I bought mine about 6 years ago on Amazon and it has held up. Finally had to replace the batteries. It seems to have held its calibration -- I haven't recalibrated it. One problem is the black plastic sleeve that should be kept on when the thermometer is not in use (to protect the sharp tip) doesn't stay on anymore. You can't see from the picture but there are some small plastic tabs that protrude from inside the tube to make a friction fit with the thermometer and keep the sleeve on. After years of use those have apparently worn down so much there's nothing to hold the sleeve on anymore.

Nice meat thermometer
Update:My Proaccurate (DTQ450) thermometer started to give me problems. I would stick it in the meat and it would intermittently just show ---- dashes. This was very frustrating. I called CDN and spoke to Judy and they said that this sometimes happens if you chip the red paint on the end. I was not aware that this was that easily damaged. After speaking with Judy, I asked if they would exchange it for a more durable model. No problem, they recommended the q2-450x as more durable but it has a different shape and would not read quite as fast, maybe a few seconds slower. Note the "x" at the end of the pn, that is the one without the delicate paint. Got the new one, and I like the different shape OK but indeed it is a few seconds slower. Not a problem for me, it works just fine. While I am not happy that I had problems with the original thermometer, I was very impressed with how quickly CDN fixed it. It was a little rough without the thermometer for a week, but now we are back to perfectly cooked meat!Original comment:I wasn't the type to use a thermometer when grilling.....always just guessed by time and by how it looked on the outside. I was pretty good at it but is was still hit and miss. With this little device, you get the meat just how you like it. Great to ensure chops are not overcooked and tough. Gives the temp within seconds, I love it, wouldn't grill without it.

You say temp read, I say Godsend!
Wow, who knew it was so hard to decide on a thermometer?! After ruining one too many pieces of perfectly good meat, I decided it was time to kick my old school, flaky, caveman times thermometer to the curb and upgrade to one that works... and works well. This is the unit that fit that bill. It's flawless so far and sooo fast. I've used it on chicken, beef, pork and while I haven't given it the old bbq grill test yet, I have a good feeling that it will work wonders in that arena as well (hence only 4 stars as opposed to 5). Definitely recommend going with this unit. It's affordable and dependable. Win-win.

A Must-Have for Every Kitchen
Every kitchen should have a digital thermometer and every cook should use one. Not only is it a must for determining if poultry and meat is done, it is handy for telling if those leftovers in the microwave are hot. It is also a must-have if you make your own yogurt. Too many other uses to list here.Cooks Illustrated got it right! If you don't have the money for aย Thermapen ย then this is the one to get. I've had this model for at least 5 years after trying several other digital models. My biggest gripes about those were slow response time and narrow temp range. The CDN DTQ450 has a wide temperature range, responds quickly, has a "temp hold" feature (lacking on the Thermapen), and has large easy to read numbers. The sleeve can be used as a handle...handy when taking the temperature of boiling liquid. It also shuts itself off after a couple of minutes to save the battery. I saw a complaints about the small buttons, but I have big "ham hands" and don't have a problem with the size if the buttons. No, you can't put it in a turkey or roast and put it in the oven, but they makeย Probe Thermometers ย for that. And no, you can't put it in the dishwasher, but why would you want to? It just wipes clean. This will be the best 18 bucks you can spend on the kitchen. I highly recommend this thermometer.

Needs better calibration
This take temperatures very quickly and the narrow probe pierces food very easily.I realize for the price that you can't have everything. One really frustrating thing about this is that its calibration function will only work if you are within a few degrees of the target temperature. If your thermometer is out of calibration more than those few degrees, you can't calibrate. I know they do this to keep people from accidentally calibrating but they need to open that range up a lot more. My thermometer's calibration was outside the range and there's really no way for me to correct it. I only use mine for cooking, though, so a few degrees off isn't a big deal.

Great little gadget.
I wish I had found this product sooner - I think it's brilliant. In the past I've always used the term "better safe than sorry" when it comes to BBQs and that usually means that the meats were often cooked slightly too long and also looked as though a crazed cook had attacked them by slashing the larger portions (to see if they were cooked in the middle). Now, I just stab them, leave the tip of the gauge in the middle of the meat for about six seconds to get what seems to me to be an accurate cooking temperature and we all get our food that little bit sooner and all in one piece. The gauge has a 5 year warranty and looks well made, I've checked the accuracy and that was ok - if you want to you can even recalibrate. I'm very pleased with my purchase and with the supplier.

Instant read thermometer
This product works as promised. Very fast reading of temperature and very accurate. The price is a little high for this item, but I am still very satisfied with my purchase.

CDN Digital Pro-Accurate Quick Tip Cooking Thermometer
First saw this on America's Test Kitchen and can honestly say it's one of the best things I have in my kitchen. I used to cook my chicken till it was like leather to make sure it was done properly. Now I just pierce it with this thermometer and it tells you quickly what temperature the meat is at. Would thoroughly recommend it.

like it so much I have bought more as gifts ...
Have used this succesfully for roasting meat to get rare or medium spot on, like it so much I have bought more as gifts for friends. Can be calibrated but tested in boiling water/ steaming kettle seemed accurate enough as it was set, as confirmed in use.
