Discover places where a day is longer than a year, where hailstones are made of diamonds, and where a mountain looms twice the size of Everest. These and more are all to be found in The Planets . The Sun’s gravity holds in thrall eight planets, each with an entourage of moons, as well as dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets. The Planets takes you on a dazzling visual tour. From the Solar System’s fiery heart, travel to rocky worlds such as tiny Mercury scorched by the Sun. Then witness Venus swathed in a sulfurous haze, and go to the outer reaches to visit planets such as gas giant Jupiter, which is 120 times the size of Earth. Using 3-D models and photography from NASA and the European Space Agency, The Planets describes each one, as well as the extraordinary endeavors of space exploration. Edited by space scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock, this book is enthralling reading for everyone interested in astronomy and space exploration. Review: An amazing book! - This book is really amazing! The pictures stir the imagination and please the eye, and the text is amazingly informative. I used this with my son (second grade) as an introduction to the solar system, and I have to admit it was a little too advanced for him. He did enjoy the pictures a lot and the info I selected to read to him was understandable, but I did have to pick and choose. This is in no way a complaint though, as I plan to reuse this book in a few years, and that will allow me to present a great deal of new info. Overall I am incredibly pleased with this book and I plan to use it for years to come. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the planets, or for a homeschool library. Review: Great book on the planets - A lot of what we thought we knew about the planets has changed since the 80s This book brought back my childhood in a way. When I was in school I had a book on the planets, called "Our Universe" , I think that was the title. It was all that we knew up to then. This book is much nicer and obviously updated since the 80s. Great pictures and short historical recap.

Well illustrated and informative
Fascinating info but not overly scientific with jargon. Great illustrations. Sometimes sidebar fonts a little small.

Just Beautiful!
Beautiful photos. I like that there is a good amount of real photos versus artist renderings. Saves me from having to explain to my three year old that we haven’t actually made it to the surface of any moon but ours and that the picture is just an artist rendition. This is beautifully compiled and each planet gets a generous amount of pages devoted to it. I also LOVE how they have diagrams of the planets opened up into layers bc my son is always asking me whats inside each planet . This book wonderfully illustrates the answer to all the basic questions any space baby will have.

Very cool book, quality control iffy
This content of this book is very informative and the graphics and text are well made and well written. My son (5) loves to read about the planets and the visuals in this book are his favorite. Unfortunately the book came with some pages fused together. Seems they were not cut fully through during manufacturing. I had to cut them apart with scissors which lead to some wonkyness. Overall I would recommend this book. It's 250+ pages and is a huge bargain at this price point. Definitely a 5 star purchase if not for the quality control issues.

Beautiful pictures in a hard cover book
I purchased this for my five year old. The pictures are great, the content is a little deep, but it's a great book. Like anything else, he was into planets and now he's on to the next thing. I'm sure he'll circle back. Book is holding up nicely. PS Pluto is a planet.
