Can't Make 'One-Punch' Washers For Every Punch Combination
For the money, I would have expected a slightly better carry case. Perfect size, but got smashed up in the mail. Anyway, this is Amazon's fault with inadequate packaging (mostly) so I digress.I have not used one of these gasket punches before, but I had assumed from the description that one could use this to mix and match in making "one-punch" washers, meaning that I do not have to change out the ID and the OD and have to punch twice to make one washer. The punches for 1/8" , 3/16", 1/4", 5/16" and 3/8" all have a male thread to insert into the centre of the punch handle (so these are the only ones that can form the ID of a "one-punch" washer). The sizes from 7/16" up to 3/4" all have a locking mechanism that fits on the OD of the punch handle, so again these are the only ones that can form the OD of a "one-punch" washer. All punches fit quite well into the handle, however, so this is a plus point. The punch handle is also fairly heavy and well made. What one cannot do is try to make a "one-punch" washer of dimensions 1/2" ID and 3/4" OD (which is unfortunately the one I wanted). I instead have to switch out these and think of a fixture to accurately punch out the ID and the OD separately, possibly by machining the handle and fixing it to my arbor press. Otherwise I will probably lose dimensional accuracy doing it by hand. Was I ignorant of gasket/washer punches? Sure: in hindsight this all seems quite obvious that it works this way. But all of this could have been avoided by having a better description and/or photos of the punch itself. The Allpax website doesn't have a much better description either. C'est la vie.
