Psych-Out, interesting late 60's historical artyfact
Interesting historical artifact from the height of the hippie exploitation era. Benefits greatly from on-location shooting in the Haight-Ashbury area in late 1967/early 1968, Both silly and profound, sometines in the same scene, the film tries to take a balanced view of the scene, but eventually the studio enforced straight ending is a detriment to the film. Interesting performances from Jack Nicholson, playing an early version of his disaffected loner from Five Easy Pieces, and Bruce Dern as an out-of-control seeker. However, 30 year old Susan Strasberg is miscast as the 17 year old deaf runaway who drives the plot. She's a fine actress, but not for this role. Max Julien steals the film as the band's perennially wasted drummer. Some good music and short performances by Strawberry Alarm Clock and The Seeds, however the music from the fictional band, supplied by some faceless/uncredited local S.F. 5th or 6th tier group, is hilariously terrible. It sounds like a high-school band that's just learned to plug in their guitars attempting to play Purple Haze. The Olive release contains the director's cut which is about 18 minutes longer than the version that released to television. The longest restored scene involves a interesting trippy sequence at the crash house, which contains a considerable amount of female nudity.

VHS still the best version of this 60's counter-culture gem
Best movie ever if you love Jack, Susan, Dean, Bruce, and the 60s counterculture movement. It's something of an acquired taste maybe, but it has a lot of genuine time period charm mixed with a bit of psychedelic cheese. All in all, it's a real trip ("This Owsley's the SHIITE").This is the best (longest and uncut) version you can currently buy! I look forward to when I can buy it on Blu-ray uncut, but right now this VHS version is more satisfying than the butchered DVD releases available now.

Fraud !
Despite what it says on the cover of the DVD, this is not the 101 minute cut of the movie restored and published in 2012 ! It is just the usual European version of Psych-Out that runs to around 85 minutes and was released in 2004 ! Thus the description of the product sold is a fraud ! Selling an old unrestored version that's long been available and that I already purchased many years ago, while pretending it's the newer restored and longer version of this fascinating Summer of Love movie ! Thus a very disappointing purchase because of fraud !

"Hey man, have you ever seen the universe explode?"
On one level this is a really, really bad film - feeble plot and hilariously stilted dialogue. On the other hand it's a brilliant time capsule of the hippy days in San Francisco. It's got great music, lashings of psychedelic visuals and a young Jack Nicholson with a ponytail. What's not to like?!!

Unusual
Unusual film which is the story of an LSD drug trip from an observers perspective and the person taking the trip. Must be fairly unique. Its all quite tame but worth a look. It is from the hippy era and features the always watchable Peter Fonda.
