Great inexpensive pocket knife
You really can't go wrong choosing a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. I find it affordable and handy enough to have carried one just about my entire adult life (70 and counting). I prefer this 'basic,' less-bulky version that doesn't take up a lot of real estate in the pocket (I can easily forget I'm carrying it): the flat and phillips screwdriver heads, can and bottle openers, the high quality stainless steel, very sharp knife blades (and the inset tweezer and ink pen) make it just about perfect for day to day, small to medium sized cutting jobs and repairs around the house. For example, I was doing some target shooting with one of my airguns today (a Crosman 1322 Carbine) and noticed a tiny Aamount of play in the shoulder stock attached to its pistol grip, but it was quickly and easily corrected with this handy little tool. Later, the wife had a delivery from Amazon Prime and needed the cardboard box cut up for the outbound trash bag, which took me only a few seconds to accomplish. Heck, now that I think about it, I probably pull out my Swiss Army Knife for one small task or another on just about a daily basis.Unless you want to get into high-dollar and possibly longer knives, or need to go with a purpose-built multitool device (too bulky for pants pockets, really), this is basically the definitive pocket knife you'll always want to have in your pocket -- and speaking of always, that's about how long it should last you, with minimal maintenance (clean out the accumulated pocket fuzz that inevitably will gather in the slots, sharpen the blades when needed, be often, etc.). I've lost one and had one confiscated when I entered a governmental building in my home town, and felt practically naked until they were replaced. It's just that hand and is one tool I can and do recommend whole-heartedly (they make a great gift to give your son when he's grows old enough too)!

A great little pocket knife
My grandpa got me (and the rest of the grandkids) an economy version one of these on his last trip to Switzerland in the 80s. I still have it.The one here is different in that the shield is embedded instead of stamped, and it also has a key/lanyard ring. The distinguishing features of this model are as such:- There are no tools on the back of the knife. While this may be viewed as a negative by some, it gives the advantage that the backsprings are smooth and flush with the back of the knife, and it is therefore more comfortable in the hand, especially during extended use.- It is the 3-1/4" size. (closed) This fits better in the hip pocket than the much more numerous 3-1/2" models. One can barely feel that it is there. If you like the smaller size, but want back tools, the Sportsman adds a corkscrew and reamer to the back, and drops the small blade in favor of a nail file. The Small Tinker (not available here at this time, despite the specs published here) adds a phillips and reamer to the back.I bought this knife as a whittler. I figured the smooth back would make it more comfortable in the hand, and I was right. One does need to remove the keyring and grind off the nub, though, for true comfort. I also got a little too creative trying to turn the can opener into a specialized carving tool. When I ground off the hook at the base of the tool, that messed up the stop, and now it closed all the way into the handle. It takes an act of God to get it out now, so I kind of ruined the knife. Oh well, it is still good for whittling! In stock form, the flat screwdriver tip on the bottle opener works well, and the small tip on the can opener works in a #2 phillips most times. Just take care that it doesn't close on your hand.

I love this pocket knife.
I love this pocket knife. It has 2 blades that come very sharp. It is the perfect EDC pocket knife. I remember my dad carrying a small pocket knife all the time. This is the modern day version of that to me. I would highly recommend.

Nice knife, but better options out there in my opinion
If you are looking for a general use Swiss Army Knife, this is a pretty good choice. Nothing wrong with it, it will serve you well I'm sure.However... I think there are better models out there for a few bucks more unless your primary focus is minimal weight in the pocket. For minimal weight with a can and bottle opener this is your knife! After buying a number of Swiss Army Knives (SAKs) I found out that I really prefer the "ALOX" type knives, the ones with the metal scales rather than the inexpensive (and lightweight) plastic scales.I recommend folks looking at this knife also take a look at the Victorinox Pioneer knife, with black Alox scales. Either the Victorinox or Wenger version of the old Soldier knife would also be a great alternative. All of these knives are a bit larger and heavier than this knife, but feel stronger and sturdier. This knife has 2 blades, a main blade and a pen blade, and a can opener and a bottle opener. The other knives I mention above have a punch (aka "awl") instead of the pen blade. I think the awl is the more useful blade to have, and another reason I prefer the other models to this particular model. If you want an American made alternative to these knives, look for a Case Jr Scout knife.
