If you are a collector of PS3 gems or a fan of character-driven action, here is the professional breakdown of this "Hidden Masterpiece." The Performance: Acting Ahead of Its Time The standout feature of Heavenly Sword isn't the combat—it’s the motion capture. Using the expertise of Andy Serkis (who plays the villainous King Bohan), the facial animations and vocal performances were years ahead of their competitors. The nuances in Nariko’s expressions and Bohan’s theatrical madness create a level of immersion that many modern AAA titles struggle to replicate. It remains one of the most "human" games on the platform. The Combat: The Tri-Stance System Unlike God of War, which relies heavily on combos and jumping, Heavenly Sword utilizes a unique Stance System: Speed Stance: Fast, dual-blade attacks. Range Stance: Linked blades that clear crowds. Power Stance: Heavy, single-blade strikes that break guards. The flow of combat is rhythmic and satisfying, focusing on countering and stances rather than button-mashing. On the DualShock 3, the lack of a dedicated "jump" button feels strange at first, but you quickly realize the game is built entirely around ground-based martial arts and cinematic "Quick Time Events" (QTEs). PROS Visual Splendor: For a 2007 title, the environments and character models are stunning. The scale of the "Nariko vs. the Army" battles still feels epic. Elite Voice Acting: Andy Serkis delivers one of the most entertaining and terrifying villain performances in gaming history. Innovative Sixaxis Control: The "Aftertouch" system—where you tilt the controller to guide arrows or debris in slow motion—is surprisingly fun once you master it. Strong Protagonist: Nariko is a brilliantly written, tragic hero whose connection to the titular sword feels earned and heavy. Orchestral Score: The soundtrack is sweeping and cinematic, perfectly matching the "Asian-Fantasy" aesthetic. CONS The "Short" Problem: The game is famously brief. You can finish the entire story in about 6 hours, which left many fans wanting more. Frame Rate Dips: Because it pushed the PS3 so hard, there are noticeable frame rate stutters during massive crowd scenes. Sixaxis Learning Curve: While "Aftertouch" is cool, some players find the mandatory motion-control segments (like the cannon sequences) frustratingly difficult. Linearity: There is almost no exploration; it is a straight-shot corridor of combat and cutscenes. Overall Input Heavenly Sword is a cult classic for a reason. It was Ninja Theory’s first real step into the "Cinematic Action" genre, and it remains a beautiful, tragic, and exciting ride. While it lacks the length of a modern RPG, it makes up for it with sheer quality and heart. It is a vital piece of the PS3’s history and a must-play for anyone who appreciates digital acting. Reviewer Pro-Tip: If you find the Sixaxis controls for the arrows or cannons too difficult, you can actually turn off motion controls in the settings and use the analog sticks instead! This makes the sniper levels significantly more manageable for those who prefer traditional controls. Also, make sure to watch the "Making Of" videos included on the disc—the work Serkis did for this game changed motion capture forever! Who is this for? Fans of Hellblade or God of War, collectors of PS3 exclusives, and anyone who loves high-quality storytelling and acting in games.

This is a fantastic near-launch game for the PS3, it plays similar to God Of War, except you play as a woman named Nariko, that is entrusted with an ancient sword that contains the power of the gods and is forced to keep it safe from evil forces. additionally you get to play as Nariko's half-sister Kai for some certain sections of the game.
