Interesting but of limited use outside engineering.
This is fascinating book that catalogues a theory of innovation in the engineering field. From my perspective as an educator/science graduate, it would seem to be an excellent book for any engineer. It describes a useful and practical process for solving complex problems in a systematic way. HAs many case studies that are interesting to the laymen too.For the rest of us, well not as useful. How to fix the wife, mend the kids, retire the boss are not covered.

A TRIZ classic
Altshuller present us an algorithm to solve complex problems. In the past this was the only path to use TRIZ for complex problem solving. Nowadays there are easier ways to do that, so the book is more valuable for historical than practical reasons.

Great introduction to creative innovation.
Great introduction, history and foundational introduction to the subject. Altshuller's writing is casual and friendly; surprisingly engaging for math/science/deep-thought kind of guy. Sometimes in his sample problems he seems to assume a fair amount of engineering knowledge (which went over my head because I have no engineering background) but the illustration of how to use the principles still comes through. A must-have for any innovation library, but it seems like it doesn't quite stand alone. Much of the work represented in the book is decades old, so I'm hoping to find a more recent companion to this book that will take the ideas of the principles to the next level. (Sneak peak: it looks like Trizics might be the answer). Altshuller ultimately is introducing an entirely new way of thinking that has potential repercussions in all fields of thought. The benefits of this book abound!

Great Book - Changed the Way That I Think About Engineering and Invention
I first read this book back in engineering school, and it changed the way that I think about engineering as a whole. In particular, it led me to a more systematic way of thinking and an understanding of why some innovation techniques work while others don't. Since reading it the first time, I have re-visited this book over and over again and used its methods successfully in many different projects. A must read for anyone interested in innovation and design. In general, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about problem-solving and how our minds work when solving challenging problems. While more focused on using TRIZ to solve problems within engineering and technical fields, I think that anyone can learn from reading this book. It tells the story of TRIZ in a way that is clear and easy to understand, while still including enough technical depth that the reader can have a good idea of how to start using the methodology going forward.

The best TRIZ book
This is one of the first books of Gtnrich Altshuller. I highly recommend everyone read it.

Revolutionary in Approach.
This is one of the truly great and original contributions to the field of creativity. Altshuller's approach shows the inadequacy of many of the existing systems of creative problem solving. I loved everything about this book, from his analysis of problem spaces, thinking backwards from the solution to it's systematic emphasis on dealing with contradictions was first rate and that's just some of the topics. My only problem with the book was that it was geared towards engineering problems and the examples while intriguing were a bit mysterious to this non-engineer. However, with a bit of thinking and some collateral resources, I think this approach can be used to solve any problem.
