3M 08579 leather & vinyl repair kit

Q: Does anyone know if the adhesive is required? The directions aren't clear - they only reference it for deep damages, not for non-deep damages.

used this kit to repair some small tears in my leather sectional. It worked great, made a very strong repair. I used a popcicle stick to spread the adhesive on the underside of the tear, all the way around the edges. then added the backer cloth that was supplied in the kit, and then added more adhesive to the edges of the tear. Let is dry for 12 hrs then used the color sets to blend the repair. The adhesive seems very strong, yet flexible, I'm sure it will hold to surface and deep tears. My repair has held for a couple of months on the seat part of the sofa, and gets pretty regular daily use.

Q: I have to mix a custom color, does my mix need to be a little lighter or darker than the leather to match when it cures?

It tends to dry a bit lighter than the original color or it did on mine. It also will look a bit "shiny" for a couple of days. It took awhile to dry and "cure"... but after several days, it has settled in and looks pretty good. I had a hard time getting it hot enough to seal. It took several times going over it trying to get it to seal well also.

Tina, I wouldn't try to fix it with the 3M product. It doesn't work.

The heat transfer tool is garbage. Every single time I've heated up it wouldn't work. I ended up using a curling iron and a glue gun. I took the glue out and just used the tip.

it is good product but particularly hard to exactly match the shade for old items (sofa)

I used to repair the bruise marks of my 10 year old Italian leather sofa. worked ok as it fixed the damage.
