Great dash cam but only when you know the right options and settings
To start with, I was a little disappointed with this camera. Rather than give up on it and return it, I decided to opt for some extras and did some research on issues I was experiencing with it. Now I can honestly say it was worth it.1st of all, I wouldn’t recommend for the long term using the included cigarette lighter plug. Get the HK3 hardwire kit for it. Although it’s not plug and play, takes some research to know how to route the cables and get power to the camera, the hardwire kit allows the camera to be powered on when the ignition turns on, and enter a neat parking mode when you turn off the engine. Be warned the best way to tap into your cars power is with ‘fuse taps’ that don’t come with this kit. To be fair, I didn’t mind this as there are 3 different types of fuses in modern cars and the fuse taps cost less than a tenner for a pack of 4 on Amazon. As I say, it’s worth the extra work as the parking mode is awesome. I set it to a Timelapse feature and found that it captured the entire period of time my car was unattended (right through the night). Naturally this uses power from your car battery, but there’s a battery saver built into the kit that ensures the camera will record for as long as it can, leaving enough power to turn the engine over when you return to it. Although I’ve not needed it yet, I believe when the camera detects an impact while parked, it captures video from both front and rear cameras from before and after the bump and locks the video file from being overwritten. The quality from the front camera is exceptional when set to 4K. The quality of the recorded file is good enough to see the smallest of detail. The rear camera is full HD and is still clear enough to be able to see the faces of the drivers behind you, let alone their number plate. However I highly recommend you get the circular polarising filters for both front and rear modules. It does well to limit glare from sunlight or the headlamps of oncoming vehicles or the cars driving behind you. This gives you a better chance of reading number plates of careless drivers. I found the footage even in night driving was clear and the wide angle lenses means the cameras have a far better view of the road and surroundings than I do as the driver. The positioning of the camera needs to be behind the interior mirror to remain legal, but means you can’t see the display and interact with the dashcam. Thankfully with the above setup, I didn’t need to interact with the camera as it starts recording the moment I unlock the car and automatically switches to parking mode when I leave the car. Apart from adjusting settings, the only other time I needed to access the camera was when I wanted to lock a video file to save a moment in time from being overwritten (for example someone driving dangerously but not actually hitting me). Fumbling behind the interior mirror to locate the middle button is far too fiddly and dangerous so I opted to buy the additional Bluetooth button and stick it to the dashboard, well within view and my reach. Pairing it to the camera was almost too easy. I only needed to take the button out of the box and press and hold the button for three seconds. As long as the dashcam’s switched on, they pair immediately. The Wi-Fi was what really let the camera down for me initially. I downloaded the VIOFO app and signed in to the Wi-Fi signal the camera creates. The reliability was awful causing my phone to regularly disconnect and then wouldn’t reconnect to the camera. In an ideal world I wanted my iPhone to automatically connect to the dashcam when I enabled Wi-Fi, but there was no way that was happening. It seemed the only way to make the iPhone reconnect was to disconnect and reconnect power. This only resolved connection issues for a matter of minutes before the connection broke again. HOWEVER, while it was connected to my phone I noticed in the app settings the option to enable 5ghz Wi-Fi. I guess for compatibility reasons, the default Wi-Fi settings are set to 2.4ghz, but this is awful. Setting the camera to ‘5ghz only’ made the world of difference. Once reconnected, the connection to my iPhone was strong and didn’t break once. Downloading large video files (300MB each) to my camera roll took seconds too. What was more, the moment I switched on the Wi-Fi on the camera, my iPhone joined the Wi-Fi signal immediately. Now I can access recorded files quickly and easily without needing to remove the memory card. The last note I’d say is with the memory card itself. I’ve noticed with my setup (and about an hour of driving a day) that my 256gb memory card captures 24 hours of combined live video (when the engines running) and time lapse (when the car’s parked). This means I can decide to keep footage from any point in the last 24 hours. Really good for times when you don’t think a moment on your journey was worth keeping until later on. Obviously, more driving per day and a lower storage capacity card will mean less time to decide to keep footage. When selecting your memory card you MUST make sure you select a High Endurance card rated as Class 10 and UHS-I. If you don’t you WILL lose video clips. This is because the amount of data coming from a 4K camera and a 1080p camera at the same time needs the fastest memory cards. Slower memory cards won’t be able to write the data quick enough for the continuous stream of video coming in so you end up with video drop-outs.Overall, my assessment of this dashcam is that it is an incredibly good dashcam with the right accessories and the right settings enabled.

Perfect. not a single regret buying this unlike my blackvue
There is so much to say about this camera ..it is going to take some time.I decided to enter this quickie for those ready to choose something on black friday...7 days to go.Buy it!ok thats too short even for an interrim review.I am surprisingly not going to waste much of your time talking about video quality even though that is the most important thing and that is because others have already.surfice it to say..excellent. actually the best you can buy on a 4k camera.please dont ever take others word for something, search online for footage from this camera (careful to see results for the viofo a129 PRO duo), not just A129 duo as they are different camers.look for a result that shows the four best cameras (including blackvue 4k) footage on one screen. This reviewer has all the cameras running at the same time and freezes the footage as cars go past, this viofo out performs signifficantly on reading registration numbers.I saw this footage and decided it was for me despite being an integrated screen camera that i thought idid not want.I have had a blackvue for many years and was dissapointed from the start, sold as a dual dashcam that had wireless but the wirless didnt allow file transfer...so what what the point? This camera not only allows wireless file transfer it has 5ghz wifi as well as 2.4.you can view live footage (great for setting the viewing angle)download fileschange all settingsViofo have put a lot of thought into this camera, i love the bluetooth button which is battery powered and can be stuck anywhere, pressing the button takes an immediate snapshot and marks the current footage so that it is not overwritten. brilliant! They give you a choice of rear cameras, the one i have from this link is attached to the rear window and records at 1080pThere is also one available that sticks to the front windscreen but looks backwards so ideal for taxis who need a view of inside their cars.Another graet design point is that despite being stuck to the windscreen, the camera can easily be disengaged from its gps mount so removing and inserting sd cards is so much easier than leaning over the dashboard - like i have for years with my blackvue.Massive storage capacity too, I am overstocked with silly 32gb cards i had to have for the blackvue, this camera accepts 256gb sc cards.on that point I have used a western digital purple 256gb sd card in it and have found that some footage has not been recorded. other users have the same card and say it works fine for them but i wonder if they review their footage as closely as I do. I have not found any missing footage on 128GB MLC viofo sd card.Western digital dont have the best reputation and selling high endurance sd cards that cant be MLC may be one of the reasons. Therefore I dont recommend WD purple card. it is expensive and doesnt say it is MLC (look that up if you want ) which is what you should be using in a dashcam to protect you your car and your wallet ( car repairs and replacing sd cards) as TLC memory will not last as long.Viofo do not sell 256gb cards yet but the ones they do sell are MLC and are amazing value with that in mind.In fact all there accessories are reasonably priced, like the auto voltage shut off hard wire kit at only £20bluetooth button only £15Update review will have some pictures and more detailOne negative I have to mention. The rear camera connection is straight so that meant i had to have the camera further down the rear screen than the old blackview was as the connector fouled on the tailgate window surround.Customer support seems good too. I have had a reply to every question I have had.Windows software is made by earthenview not by viofo, it is great, certainly compared to the blackview viewer with so many configurable options BUTthe free version only allows you to load two video files at a time, the paid for version is unlimmited and costs 25 us dollars (£19) when i bought it and that is a non declared lifetime payment. (the developer told me they had no intention of charging people twice and never have )The player will even cope with footage recorded on other makes of camera too.One more slight niggle , the gps map which scrolls as the footage plays often shows an immidiate trip to south africa or similar with no return journey. I like the fact that i can be The Doctor (who are you asking?) but have no memory of these trips.Cleraly it is a gps issue and to be honest if it can't be sorted i am not bothered, the whole journey is still clearly shownThats it for the short version, if you saw any grammatical mistakes please let me know and if you appreciated that the review did not start with the preposition "SO" press the helpful button.enjoy your dash camThe camera has an extensive menu that even lets you format the sd card if you want, that is more useful than you think as the cards must be formatted as fat32...NOT EXFAT nor ntfs.it is not possible to do this easily with windows 10, even sd card formatter from the sd card foundation wont.there is a program freely available though that will allow it on windows.
