So far, works great
Easy to set up, solid product. The drives go in really easily, the system boots up really quickly, and the transfer speed is much better than the bay it replaced. Recommended.

Becomes useless pretty fast-Goes to sleep and can't wake up
So I bought this to function as a pooled backup drive. Installed easy, handled large TB drives. Feels well built. Worked well while the backups and file transfers were running. The problem comes in after the enclosure is idle for about 10 minutes. As advertised, it "goes to sleep". If going to sleep means two drives stay lit, but no drives are active or accessable, and there is NO WAY TO WAKE UP the drives or enclosure, so once it goes down, the only way to bring it back up is to physically reboot the enclosure. This obviously makes it completely useless.I tried to reach out to customer service, the Orico webpage is very much not meant for english users (it was translated to english, but only to tell you how the products are wonderful). If you try submitting technical support issues, the website won't let you proceed and has a popup, in what looks to be chinese, when you try to submit the inquiry. The support inquiry never seems to go through. I tried emailing some of the email addresses on their contact page, but that doesn't seem to get a response. I don't read chinese (or whatever language it is), so there seems to be no way to submit a support ticket. There also is no way to do a return on Amazon at this point for me, I guess I'm past the limited window for this product, which means I just wasted 250+ dollars.I figured the desktop software might help. The desktop software is in .RAR format, and while I have software that can open that file type, nothing seems to be able to open the download.....so again useless.

Using as a NAS
I was using 2 Sabrent 2-bay docking stations as a NAS system for my Zappiti media player. .Wanted to find something a little better and so far this is working perfectly. Has been about a week but haven't had any problems so far. I used the Sabrent docking system to format the HDD and just installed the drives into the docking station. This would probably work for about any movie watching situation.

Awesome JBOD box, Great standalone RAID enclosure
I purchased this device through Newegg, but thought I'd share how happy I am with this device here. Backstory, I'm a bit of a data hog. ~500GB of music, ~2TB of movies, 200GB of photos, and 600GB of OS Installation Media (local tech support for friends and family). Lots of junk, could probably get rid of most stuff I don't use anymore. But that's besides the point.I have all 5 bays filled. Two 14TB drives in RAID 1, two 8TB drives in RAID 1, and a 5TB that just has BS dumped onto it that I don't care to sort. Probably will get wiped in the near future.Look and feel:This thing is STURDY. The aluminum construction has a great anodized finish to it, very smooth and even. The drive bay covers feel a little flimsy, but they have not caused much concern when opening and closing them. They are "lockable" with a hex key that comes included. Anyone can go to Walmart, buy a multi-piece precision screwdriver kit and unlock the drive bays. It's not the most secure thing in the world. The rear I/O is kinda spaced out, with USB and power being on total opposite sides of the device. The RAID dipswitches are oddly placed somewhere between and the red/white coloring really makes it stick out.Software:I found the software side of it a bit odd. In order to put these devices in RAID, you need to grab some special software from Orico's website, and it's not totally obvious which RAID software you're looking for. Once in the software, it's pretty straight-forward. I would recommend using the advanced mode, which has more options. If you have questions, a 60 second Google adventure will tell you all the answers you're looking for. NOTE: The software only needs to be ran once for initial setup. It does not need to be ran again until you need to change the configuration.Function:Overall, I'm kind of shocked about how well this device performs. Out of all my drives, the lowest transfer speed is around 115Mbps, which is impressive for spinning drives. Both drives are written to simultaneously, which can be loud. While idle, the device is nice a quiet. I do find myself waiting for all 5 drives to spin up, but it's not terrible. The data that is on there isn't severely important to have access to quickly, so I'm not too worried about that. Like other reviews have said, there's no way to disable the device from spinning down the drives after 10 minutes of inactivity. I personally do not have a problem with this, as I turn the device off when I'm not using it anyways. Old habits die hard, I suppose. I PERSONALLY find it more annoying that Windows will check to see if drives are still connected when opening applications that have nothing to do with the enclosure, like starting a game or watching YouTube videos. Just randomly, Windows decides it needs to do a device check, and it causes the drives to spin up. Linux does not do this, but there is no utility to setup RAID functionality. Please note, I have not had a failed drive in this device, so I do not know what happens when that is the case. I would hope that the replacement drive is rebuilt automatically without the software installed, but I cannot verify.Overall, I am highly impressed with the device. I got it for a great price on Newegg, and I am still happy with my decision. It was either this or a custom built one, but then I'd have to put in manual labor haha.HIGHLY recommended for data hoarders of information that doesn't necessarily need to be accessed quickly. Great device for effortless "backups," or at least better data retention than not having two identical drives. Mirrored and cloned drives are not the same, in case you didn't know :)EDIT:After a year of solid usage, the enclosure is still going strong. One of the 8TB drives died and promptly replaced (thanks Seagate!). The rebuilding process is a little hands - you need to open the controller software, select the degraded RAID config, select the new drive, and then leave it be. You can close the software once you confirm the new drive.I'm removing one star because the HDD spin-down function is unreliable. In the software, I have the enclosure set to spin down the disks after 60 minutes of inactivity, though this option seems to be ignored. As previously stated, I find the wait slightly annoying when accessing the drives in the enclosure. I still highly recommend this device and I couldn't imagine being without it, but I expect better support from Orico. I own several of their products that simply work for a reasonable price - this is cheap for what it is, but not having much support will drive people away.TL;DR - This is an awesome device that simply works. It has it's little quirks to it, but saving close to $100 compared to competitive devices is a decent trade off in my opinion. I think of this device as more of a DAS than a RAID enclosure. If this will be connected to a Desktop, you should buy NAS or Enterprise drives, something rated to run 24/7. If you intend to connect it to a laptop for less than half the day, NAS/Enterprise drives may not be necessary. Your mileage may vary, but I have zero regrets buying this!

Super hard drive unit.
Bought this item do use has a redundant backup system for my 2012 Mac computer. It was a great investment. Wasn't too costly. I highly recommend this for anyone thinking of using a redundant backup system for all your information on your computer.
