Quiet and fast
After my old Genie screw type garage door opener failed after 10 years I decided to replace it with another Genie product. Even with the mixed reviews here I decided to purchase the Genie SilentMax 1200. After reviewing the enclosed instructions and measuring my garage door, 7' tall, I found that I did NOT need to purchase the extension kit. However one of the two garage door opener fobs was missing from the packaging. I placed a call to the supplied Genie support number on a Saturday morning and was able to have a replacement fob mailed to me in just a few minutes. I'm not sure when other reviewers have called Genie's support number but I did not have to wait in a calling queue and the support assistant was polite and friendly.Installation was simple and the directions were concise and easy to follow. The enclosed installation poster has a color coded bag displayed next to each step that holds the required bolts/nuts, if fasteners are required for that step, so don't dump them out into one big pile! I was able to remove my old unit and install the new unit in just over 2 hours. HINT: If you are replacing an existing garage door opener make sure that you flag the wiring to mark which component it runs too before removing it. The prior owner of my home did not save the instructions of the old unit so I had to trace the lines (in my case the lines were piecemeal telephone lines with segments of solid two wire lines combined) to their appropriate components. Although the installation instructions state that one or two of the steps require two people I was able to do it by myself with the help of two ladders (so if you are not handy then don't try those steps alone). I spent another hour setting up the garage door control panel, the safety-beam devices, the key fobs and the wireless entry; to be fair much of this last hour was spent fixing the prior wiring that I inherited with the house. The unit opens/closes my garage door quickly and quietly. The only sounds I hear when opening/closing the garage door are the sound of the garage door creaking and the belt running. It is much faster than the old unit it replaced. The motion sensor light control is a great addition and is very useful when I am carrying something through my garage with my hands full. The new unit does not have the extensive range for fob commands to open/close the door of the unit that it replaced but I have no issues with this. I have found that the fobs work roughly 20 feet away. The only negative I have with the new unit is that the wireless entry device allows you to open/close the garage door for about 30 seconds after entering the code once. I would rather have to enter the code each time but that is a minor issue.Overall the SilentMax 1200 is great and exceed my initial expectations after reading the mixed reviews. It was easy to install and with the faster speed and lack of noise compared to the unit it replaced I would recommend it to anyone.

Pretty straightforward install as a replacement opener
This unit replaces a Harrison opener. That unit didn't have integrated remote control, and we'd had difficulty finding a remote receiver with sufficient range to work well. The old unit also had trouble getting the door started on the open cycle after we'd installed a door seal around the door opening. This Genie solved both problems: It works flawlessly with the Homelink system in our Toyota Tacoma (2012), and it automatically adjusted its opening force - the door now opens smoothly and without complaint.Installation was straightforward. We were able to use the existing bracketing from the old opener, which eliminated what is probably the most difficult part of the installation. We have an 8' door, and so had to purchase the Genie 1' extension kit. The kit's directions could have been better-written; we wound up spending almost 90 minutes getting the rail and belt assembled and it should have taken, like, 5 minutes. Once that was done, the entire install took about an hour, including mounting the safety-beam devices, the wall panel, the wireless keypad, and programming the remotes (and the truck). We were able to re-use existing wall panel and safety-beam wiring, again eliminating what would probably be one of the more hassling portions of the install. The unit is quiet and quick - the garage door itself makes far more racket than the opener. Operation is smooth throughout the cycle, although the ease-down during close is a bit gentler than the somewhat sudden stop when the door hits full-open.The instructions (which can be downloaded from the manufacturer's Web site prior to purchase, if you like) are printed on a gigantic poster, which is a bit inconvenient. We wound up affixing it via magnet to the circuit breaker panel in the garage, just so we could see everything without constantly re-folding the poster. But the instructions were clear and concise, and the parts were in color-coded bags which made them fairly easy to locate. This does require two people - in theory, one person could do this, but it would be incredibly awkward and potentially unsafe. You'll also need a ladder (two would be better) and some common hand tools, which are all documented in the install instructions.
