Thought provoking. But not a book for Americans.
Well well, a man whose views are very close to mine. A good analysis of the introversion, arrogance and stupidity of America. But much more measured and objective than I am. Well researched. A European view (Todd is French, but the translation is excellent) that Americans could never relate to. I think, in a nutshell, Todd's overall conclusion is that Americans are so isolated from the real world that they can't see other people as human beings. And that would indeed account for quite a bit of America's behaviour.

The gap between then 2002 and now 2024
Ok, so. This book highlights an important facet of the declining US power and the way many countries are both skeptical about US policies and the need of countries to decouple themselves during and after the Iraq war. But the most shocking thing is that in 2024 every european country has aligned itself w the US, pretending all those previous issues don't matter. Instead of peace talk it is war talk. And creating the false image of an 'unprovoked' attack on Ukraine and Putin as a modern day Hitler. I am shocked about the non historical propaganda doing the rounds and the nonsensical stupidity in contrast to this book and where we as europeans stood in 2002. It deserves an after afterword.
