Magewell USB Capture HDMI Plus - 32040

I chose this because Magewell products tend to have solid reviews and the company officially supports Linux. My only reservation is that the product and documentation don't lay out the basic gotchas you might run into, so I'll do my best to cover those at the bottom of this review.In general, it does what it says. You can give it up to a 4K signal at 60 Hz and it will pass the signal through to the HDMI loop unaltered, and downsample it over the USB to a maximum of 1080p at 60 Hz.Strangely, the box only says it take up to 30 Hz at 4K, but the online description, my eyes, and my TV all agree that it works at 60 Hz.There seems to be a short delay between the source and the USB output. If I were to estimate, it looks like about a quarter second when it's outputting 1080p60, and I think it may be less at lower settings. I expect this would only be a problem if you're trying to play action games through the USB capture. I don't notice any delay on the loop-through output so I'd suggest playing such games through the loop-through.The headphone jack does work, but I'll caution it is not amplified. If you try to plug headphones without an amplifier in you will have a very hard time hearing it.Technical gotchas:First, be sure you're using a USB 3.0 or higher slot on your PC. The easiest way to tell is a USB 3 slot has a blue plastic insert. If you try to use a USB 2 slot it will actually work, but you'll be limited to lower resolutions and frame rates. I did not see any indications from the device when this was happening.Also note this does NOT strip HDCP, and if it receives an HDCP-encrypted signal, it will just output a black screen. Verify that whatever device you want to capture supports non-HDCP output. Off hand, the PS4, Wii U, and most PCs will work fairly easily. Most other peripherals could pose an issue, so be sure to Google a bit to know if your device will work with this.And a Linux-specific note: As far as I can tell, the official drivers don't do anything, at least on modern kernels. This is a minor deal as the generic V4L drivers seem to work perfectly. I installed the official ones to see if they might allow some more specialized configuration, but they don't even detect the device.

This thing just works. The hardware just works. The app just works (even on Windows 7). It all just works perfectly. The app gives you all the control you need (my RX100 M2 wasn't able to output a fully clean hdmi signal so I used the app to crop off the ISO information at the bottom flawlessly), it's small and fast and clean and is not some giant mess of .NET libraries or whatever, the hardware is plug and play and provides apps access to all possible resolutions. It's expensive but you get what you pay for, it's the best piece of electronics I've bought in ages.

The quality is really nice. Plug & play on my windows 7 system. Works in skype and Facebook live. It's much less hassle than another video capture device (PCIe card from another company which had terrible software) I had and sent back.This unit gets a bit hot (as I have it plugged in permanently) so I hope that doesn't cause problems down the road.Note: I use it with a Sony a6300 camera, HDMI pass through to a 4K TV (but the camera is 1080p setting). It just works!The picture attached is a phone screenshot from a Facebook live thing I did. Streamed at 720p with no glitches. I thought the quality over USB wouldn't be as good as PCIe, but but for live streaming and skype, it's pretty nice. I can't comment on the recording/capture, though. I haven't done that.

I purchased this along with a usb 3.1 gen 2 usb pcie card, and it just works. I've gone through several other brands of PCIE capture cards and none of them just work. I have 3 video source imported in to my live video machine for streaming, and this one set up in just seconds. I got the usb card in, pluged in the capture device, plugged in the HDMI, installed the sotware and bam the video stream was there. No flickering, no source not found. It was great. I wish I could just replace the other two video capture cards, but that's not in the budget at this time.

One of the most amazing devices I've purchased. Not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. If you need to stream HDMI into your PC/Mac this gets the job done very well. It's worked on every machine I've tried it on, provides excellent quality video (I'm streaming directly from a Nikon D7500 into my iMac or MacBook Pro laptop), is super light and is easy to transport around in your camera bag. My only gripe is that the USB 3 cable that's provided isn't very long, but I bought an HDMI cable that makes up for it.I use it for tech videos that I make. The Magewell just has blown me away. The reason being, for months I have wanted to know how to connect my Sony HD cam corder to Facebook live. Thus enabling the zoom feature and to stream at the same time either with my PC or my Note 8 Samsung phone. (I video our church services and we wanted to stream live) This incredible Magewell has made all that possible. I only give it a 4 because, I wish Magewell could focus more on how it can be used and it's set up. Yes, there are a lot of Utube vids supposedly showing how to set it up and how it can be used. I think I viewed them all. Yet, for a beginner I could not find any to truly help me out. I had to figure it out on my own. Thus, I'm thinking of doing a demo on utube for how simple and easy this 300.00 plus item truly is..
