Q: I have 12 inch calves at widest point but just above the ankle is only 7 inches. recommend small or medium?

I believe mine are a medium and I am pleased with the fit. My calf is roughly 16 inches and my ankle is 10. Small might be your better bet. If they are too loose, they are no good. Hope this helps.

Q: Do they impair your mobility at all for box jumps?

Absolutely not! The purpose of the shin guard is to protect. They don't impair your ability to jump. They wear like socks. They can give you more courage. I usually jump 20. A few weeks ago, I jumped 24. Whoop! If you have ever missed a box jump and got torn skin and bruises and sore for weeks, then wear your skin guards. I missed the box while wearing the shin guard. My shin didn't tear or bruise like before the shin guards, but my shin was sore to the touch for a day or so. Hope this helps.

Q: Are these left/right specific or interchangeable?

Generic, no right or left-they are interchangeable.

Q: It’s small around the ankle and i can’t zip the zipper, but the calf fits well. should i go up to medium?

I have the same issue with the larger one. As these are meant for calf protection and yours fits well, I would stay with the current size and just protect your ankle with socks underneath.
