You can use ants you find!
The media could not be loaded. The best part of this ant farm is that it comes with the right kind of sand the ants need to tunnel in. You can get any ants from outside without having to pay more to buy the scary carpenter ants that bite. I feel so much better about letting my son keep this in the house with the baby ants he collected by hand from outside. Plus - having him “forage” for his own ants has kept him busy even longer! He is also having fun feeding them and giving them water, unlike the gel that you don’t have to do anything with. It’s also much stronger than you’d think, we can carry this around and the tunnels don’t collapse at all. Just make sure you add the sand the right way according to the directions by adding some water.

Perfect & Easy Set Up
Exactly as pictured. I bought this for my niece’s 10th birthday, and ordered the ants separately. It was easy enough for her to set up on her own and instructions were informative and easy to follow. She’s very happy with it, and I’m contemplating buying one for myself!

Too much sand—the ants are plotting their escape!
This thing is really cool. We ordered the ants separately per the instructions. Poor little guys were thirsty when they arrived. My only issue is that there’s way too much sand for the size of the enclosure and the size of the ants. The surface level was super high at the lower edges so that some escaped when we removed the lid to move their food. Now that they’ve been burrowing for a day, the surface level is all the way to the top. If we lift up the small lid to give them more food and water, more will surely escape. Also, I think they’re trying to tell us something with the shape of their tunnels=( We’ve really annoyed it so far. But we might have to release these little critters sooner than we had expected unless we come up with a plan to open the food door without escape.

Kids LOVE it! And, its pretty easy to maintain
Received this ant farm as a Christmas gift for the kids, and it's been great. Careful to not over water it.

This is a bad product and falsely says it’s an “ant factory”
This product and others like it use worker Western Harvester ants. There is no Queen and therefore it can’t be a “factory”. Ants must be replaced about every four weeks or so.In addition, the ants are venomous and some climb the plastic wall as and escape every time the top is opened to feed or water the ants. They sting! The product also falls over easily and the top comes off, pouring out sand and ants.I also clearly stated in my return that it had been used and was unsuitable. I received a QR code and returned it. Now I’m being notified that if it’s been used or opened I’ll be charged again.Do not buy this product! False advertising and false return information!

The Ants are Escapists and Biters - Beware
I purchased this ant farm for my 11 y/o after he put it on his birthday list. It was easy to set up and the ants we ordered, using the enclosed coupon, arrived quickly. We set the ants up with a cut up blueberry and water. The trouble began, several days later, when we needed to remove the center portion of the lid to add food. They pretty much all escaped, repeatedly. One bit my thumb, and compared to a bee sting, the ant bite was much worse. It's a killer sting. Luckily, my son has a bug sucker and after much wrangling by two adults we got all the ants back in.I really don't think I would recommend this to another parent. I would say instead to let your child explore outside in nature, all the wonderful bugs, in their natural environment.
