Nestle Pensal Cevada (Barley) 200g - Roasted Ground Barley Coffee Substitute

I have tried any coffee substitutes looking for a warm drink when I want a second cup or evening drink without caffeine. I normally drink my coffee with half and half or NIDO powder and no sugar. I found Pensal Ceveda to be a great alternative to coffee when mixed with NIDO. It dissolves quickly and without lumps. It accepts the milk powder even when I add twice the recommended rate for an extra creamy drink. The Pensal Ceveda is a little too dark for me on its own. It has a hint of sweetness that is natural, not overpowering or too pure (like when you put white sugar crystals in a drink). If you are looking for a hot, not caffeinated beverage I strongly suggest this one. The delivery took about 2 weeks, however I ordered at the holidays when all mail services were a little slow due to the volume of packages they were moving. The Ceveda powder packs a lot of flavor in a little spoonful, so the price is great as I expect to get many cups of dark, rich warmth out of one jar.

I used to buy Postum years ago when it was commonly found on grocery shelves. It's much harder to find now, and a lot more expensive. So I was thrilled to find this malted barley coffee substitute. The flavor is satisfying with no caffeine. I prefer mine with half and half. And the price is very reasonable. I stocked up - just in case!

This is similar to others that I also enjoy, but this comes as a fine powder rather than a freeze-dried product. I prefer straight roasted Barley drinks like this to others that contain Chicory - which for me has a strange aftertaste. This has a nice flavor and it mixes into hot water easily. I'd recommend.

When I was a child visiting my mom's family in Portugal, my grandmother would make my sister and I a "galao" (the Portuguese version of a latte) every morning with breakfast. Her version was made with cevada instead of coffee. I am not a tea person but cannot drink coffee past noon, and was excited to try this as a more coffee-like option. It is perfect! I steam soy milk, add the Pensal, and I feel like I'm back in my grandmother's kitchen. Makes me so happy! I would say that in my opinion it works better with your choice of milk or dairy-free alternative -- I did not enjoy it with just water -- too thin and bitter.

I don’t drink this as a coffee substitute. I was raised drinking roasted ground barley in my family and I love it.When I moved to a different country, finding this product was a big relief, since other options were very expensive.Taste is not as great as freshly roasted ground barley, but it’s a huge source of comfort for me. I love drinking this on cold weather days.

I picked up a jar of Pensal after watching a TV food show about Roman cuisine and the popularity of roasted brewed barley coffee in that city. I've been looking for a caffeine free coffee substitute for a long time! Both my husband (black) and I (cream and sugar) enjoy Pensal in place of coffee during the afternoon and evening. Roasty, nutty, mildly sweet, and just a hint of bitterness -- everything we love about coffee!

Pleasant flavor. Blends easily
