CD: Roy Orbison,The Very Best Of

A LASTING LEGACY
Whenever a truly great star expires, out come all the re-issues -- best of, very best of, the ultimate etc etc, which are usually all the same or similar tracks, but arranged in a different order. Roy's widow saw to everything after he'd gone, taking very tight control of his vast musical legacy, but then of course she died also. I'm in the process of ruthlessly down-sizing my rather overgrown collection, and to cover Mr. Orbison with just on or two discs is difficult, but in the end I went for this because it goes from his early days with Sun, through perhaps his greatest era with Monument (some re-recorded, but just as good as the originals) right into the 'revival' period centred around UK producer Jeff Lynn via the supergroup The Travelling Wilburys -- in fact from Ooby Dooby to California Blue and She's A Mystery to Me, stuff he did on the famous 'Black and White Night'. There's even a duet with Emmylou Harris. It doesn't come much better! The only 'yucky' track I don't like, and never have, and that's 'Pretty Paper' (too much Kleenex). Otherwise a great album. The Big 'O' -- a great bloke, a private family man, a unique voice and a great career. Certainly do miss those high notes though when I saw him singing live, but at least now I've got them as a memory for good -- well, I thought I had until I found the disc to be defective and had to return it. Needless to say there's a replacement on its way -- pronto, please Amazon!

A great CD from a great Artiste
I was very pleased with the content of this CD. I am very wary of cheap 'Greatest Hits' because sometimes the tracks are not originals but apart from my doubts about 'In Dreams' they all sound like originals. There are a few of Roy's hits that are not included but when the guy has produced so many great songs some have to go. There were some tracks that maybe I wouldn't have chosen because songs like 'Workin for the Man' and 'The Crowd' are sadly missing. This is still a great CD however, and a great buy.

Lovely music, wonderful singer
I've enjoyed Roy Orbison's music since my youth, when Blue Bayou became a hit, but for some reason not until now have I got around to buying a "best of" album. This doesn't disappoint. All the well known favourites are here but also some I've never heard before. Astonishing vocal range and, as with the best pop singers, you can hear every word! As I am home alone a great deal of the time at the moment, this album and also the equally wonderful "A Love So Beautiful" are my lockdown presents to myself! What more, one wonders, would Roy have achieved had he not died so tragically young?

The legend: Roy Orbison
When I searched the Amazon music store for some Roy Orbison songs, after seeing a good show of his on TV, I was looking for an album - in their comprehensive range - that contained at least a few of his fine hits, but the item I purchased surpassed my expectations by containing several of his great songs, imagine how pleased I was at that! The album really lived up to its title 'The Very Best of Roy Orbison'.He was multi-talented, in that his rich, powerful voice, with its wide range of levels carried off his unique style of singing in a very effective and moving way, and he also wrote a lot of his own material.I highly recommend this great disc to any other potential buyers out there. Well done, Amazon, for proving, once again, that you stock all the best stuff in your store!

Great CD
I purchased the latest Roy Orbison cd , the one with the Philharmonic orchestra, for my husband who is a big fan, but he kept telling me how much he prefered the original recordings by Roy Orbison, he felt the backing orchestra was too loud and drownd out his voice. I had enough of his grizzling so I purchased the Very Best Of Roy Orbison for him. He loves thid cd and is now a very happy bunny!
