Indispensable for a cocktail cabinet
My girlfriend and I are both fans of bittersweet cocktails such as a negroni and as such Campari is a must for our drinks cabinet.Campari is an Italian aperitif, one of a couple of famous brands. This is probably the more intensely flavoured variety and as such provides a more robust flavour. This is more noticeable in a negroni, as it isn’t diluted with something like soda, but will be less noticeable in, say, a spritz which it is. It can be enjoyed straight over ice or it readily mixes with things like vodka. It is a very ‘grown-up’ flavour, being so bitter, and is also very refreshing in a tall, cool drink or served as an aperitif. This is a full litre bottle, so ought to last a good long while, which means it’s very good value for money, at a bit above £25. We’re actually still making our way through a 75cl bottle we bought over a year ago (we’re lightweights!).Roll on the summer, so I make big pitchers of Campari spritz!

Bitter bite
Five stars for the exalted status of Campari as an ingredient for cocktails including a negroni or Americano. At least two stars less for its taste in its own right, unless the mild shock of bitter flavours is a sensation you enjoy. Some describe the taste of Campari as woody, and bearing that in mind, that certainly comes through, along with the presence of clove and cinnamon. The flavour of straight Campari is probably best viewed as an acquired taste. The bitterness and spice of Campari is probably felt by many, certainly by me, as best experienced with a sweeter mixer and ice, or as a cocktail ingredient bringing the depth and bite of the bitter and spice to the recipe!

Perfect for cocktails!
It's not really the season where I would drink Campari (being in the depths of winter) as, for me, it conjures up the outdoors and summer.Still, this is as I remember it - very bitter, but with sweet notes and complex flavours. Perfect for the traditional Campari cocktails like a negroni, but I find the flavour can match surprisingly well with certain whiskies, if you're prepared to experiment.I appreciate the flavour might not be for some, but, if it's for you, this is a good buy!

Campari Bitter is a must-have for anyone who enjoys bitter liqueurs or classic cocktails.
Campari Bitter is a must-have for anyone who enjoys bitter liqueurs or classic cocktails. The bitterness is bold but balanced, making it an acquired taste for some, but a beloved favorite for others. Its unique flavor makes it a key ingredient in many classic cocktails, most notably the Negroni, where it pairs beautifully with gin and sweet vermouth. Whether you're mixing up a Negroni or sipping it neat, Campari is sure to impress. If you're a fan of bitter aperitifs or looking to explore classic cocktails, Campari Bitter is definitely worth trying.

A Marmite among drinks...
I hadn't had a Campari in years, so when this came up for review I jumped at the chance... and it was just as I remembered it: delicious.Well, delicious if you like bitter; it's the sort of thing my wife can't abide. It's sweet but at the same time has a complex, bitter, herbal note which lingers long after the sweetness has gone. Its precise composition is still a secret but think woody notes of wormwood and perhaps licorice (the woody type you chew, not the sweet). I like it neat but you can serve it over ice, with soda, with tonic, with lemonade if you want more sweetness, and in a classic Negroni cocktail. It's traditionally drunk as an aperitif but you can turn it into a summertime long drink if you want, too.As I say, it's a Marmite among drinks; you'll either love it or hate it. If you decide to love it, however, you'll be able to claim ownership of a sophisticated palate!Give it a try. If you don't like it, send it to me; I'll drink it.
