Primary use is kindling not carving. is this good for that?

Can I use the handle to start a fired?

The handle can be used for kindling if you really want, though that might void your warranty.

Can you use the back of the hatchet as a hammer?

Yes you can, within reason! You can drive tent pegs or wooden wedges (not metal ones) for splitting . The pole is hardened but it is not a hammer.

This is my first ever axe purchase for teaching myself survival wood skills. Is this a good investment?

In my opinion NO! Get a carpenters axe, better for woodsman and wood craft the best bargain is the Husqvarna one on Amazon! I would then consider the hatchet as second choice master your craft first, I own seven axes and chainsaw and hope to do some YouTube videos soon to show why!
