No the base is not hard. It takes the shape of the clothes that you put inside. Usually when you fill it, they take a square form.

Hi, depends how much you take away with you. Personally we have one set for each of us, but you probably could get away with 2 sets if your children are small. If all adults, then I would say 1 set each to be on the safe side. They are fantastic, wouldn't be without them.
