Royal Robbins Men's Backcountry Shorts

These are some of my favorite hiking shorts. I own a pair in khaki, and a pair in everglade. I was a bit puzzled by other reviewers not liking the fit, so I measured the waist on a pair that has been worn about 12 times. I typically wear a 38' waist, and ordered these RR shorts in a size Large. With the elastic waist completely relaxed, these shorts measure approximately 36 inches the waist. Stretching the elastic waist to maximum, the waist extends almost to 42 inches. So the Large does fit for my 38 waist but with some stretching of the waistband.Overall, I love the fit and function of the pockets on these shorts. The slash back pockets are pure genius in their design, making access to the pockets very easy. The belt is comfortable and doesn't rub underneath my backpack's belt. They a cool, comfortable, and dry quickly.

I have 2 pairs of these short that are 7-9 years old and they began to show signs of wear and tear: a loose belt buckle here, a hole in a pocket there. Please note that I an an intense hiker and my shorts are used intensively. So I spent 2 hours in Dick's, REI and Academia trying various shorts by Columbia, REI, North Face, Patagonia, Marmot, BCG and God knows who else. The designs were preposterous, the fabrics were flimsy, and the colors, in Patagonia's case, were definitely picked up by someone on acid. North Face was especially disappointing since I love this company and am very happy with their backpack, fleece, etc etc. So I checked Amazon for Royal Robbins, ordered a pair, and got an exact copy of my old shorts. Nothing has changed: same nylon, same color, same length, same fit. This gives me hope: maybe there is a place on Earth where Windows stay XP forever?Update (March 2018): Since my shorts were stolen in Curacao, I've ordered another pair. Everything is perfect again.

I bought these as replacements for a pair I bought about six years ago. The design details are the same and the material seems similar or the same but the similarity ends there. They say "relaxed fit" but are much tighter around the legs and two inches shorter than the originals. I am 38" waist and got large but they are nowhere near big enough. Pulling the elastic waist taut the button is a least two inches from the buttonhole. Although they are marked large they fit and are cut as if they are mediums or even smaller. Made in a different place now according to the label so I don't know to what extent that factors in but they are not the same thing I bought before. Buy at least one size bigger than you think you need.

I got these for my husband who is 6"3" and weights about 220 with a 38-ish waist. He has long legs. These shorts are perfect. When I first got them for an upcoming vacation by the beach, he didn't want to try them on, but now he loves them and I have ordered more. So that is the good news. Oh, and they are super comfortable. Lots of pockets. He keeps finding new pockets.The bad news is that now he wears them everywhere and the criteria for accepting a social invitation is, "Can I wear my new shorts?!" Several reviewers want a mesh bathing-suit type lining, but not my husband!These wash well in warm water and I guess you could put them in the dryer on low. I did dry them in the dryer once, on low, and they came out perfectly but now my goal is to make them last as long as possible, so I air dry them, which is also fast.I ordered another three pair.A winner!!! Perfect five starts in every category

I bought 2 pair 5 years ago. I live in a warm climate and wear shorts most of the year. So most days I'm wearing these shorts.I've only had to buy this new pair because, through no fault of the original shorts, they got stained. Otherwise they are still in perfect shape. Super light, cool, and fast drying. I'm so thankful that I was able to find an exact replacement. When it's perfect, there's no need to change it up!

I bought two pairs of these about 15 years ago, I can't even remember where. I wore them a lot, just about every day in the spring/summer/fall when I am out and about, walking the city. But the old pairs were showing wear, so I went hunting for a replacement. I found these, which are almost identical. The only difference is a different type of belt clasp. The fit is exactly the same, same pockets. They wear like iron. Really pleased to have found another 2 pairs for the next 15 years.

At least an entire size too small. My waist is 34 which puts me on the larger end of size M. For fit I'm usually I'm on the border between M and L so I ordered an L. But it fit tighter than an M usually does. Am exchanging it for an XL. Royal Robbins, there is no excuse for this. The sizing (inches) of S/M/L etc. is pretty standard in the U.S. Change your size labeling to match the actual size of the garment, not what your overseas supplier thinks it is.

The other reviews are correct. This item is WAY too small. With a 42 waist, I should have ordered an XL per their sizing chart. After reading the reviews, I ordered XXL to be on the safe side. They were still way too small. Quality is okay, but I didn't like the velcro closing back pockets as they are not very secure. The legs were also shorter than I expected. Had to send them back. Am replacing with the ExOfficio Amphi 10" shorts which are much higher quality and fit much better.

You cannot beat the quality of these shorts. My last pair lasted me 6 years and they have been on several expeds with me. Pockets are ample, in the right place and offer a security zipped pocket.

Shorts were great and I use them a lot in the summer and when traveling.

Good material. It’s lightweight yet strong and comfortable.
