Toshiba Canvio AeroMobile Wireless SSD (HDTQ112XCWF1)

2015-Apr-6Just received today. Initial Impressions (3-stars):1) Light weight. Bought this with intent as a back up HD for travel photography. =)2) Setting up WiFi connection is quite frustrating. Like other reviewers said, documentation that comes with the package is terrible. However, Toshiba support site has a good video tutorial showing how to initialize connections. Set up passwords for admin and WiFi connection through the iPad app. =/3) Once connected, I started backing up photos and videos from my iPad. Took about 30 to transfer ~50%. Then it auto-updated, canceling the progress. =(4) After software update, I couldn't re-connect via WiFi. The unit would no longer accept the password that I set up, nor would it take the default password. =(5) Called Toshiba Customer Support. The person kept answering questions that I didn't ask. Didn't seem to understand that all I wanted was to get re-connected. Seems like she had no idea that this was a Toshiba product. Ended up referring me back to the support website (#2 above). Someone needs better training. =(6) Found out how to re-set the unit via online FAQ on Toshiba website. Got everything re-set and re-connected. Passwords set up again. =/7) Started up iPad backup again. Took ~1hr to get 7GB over. Backup via WiFi is slooooooow, but it works. =/8) Tried out backup of an event shoot from the weekend. Plugged in my SD card. Transferred 4GB in under 10 min. Bingo! =DGood:- Interface works ok- Photos transfer from SD (SDHC) card very quickly- Multiple users easy to switch between (useful for uploading for multiple people or multiple shoots)- Helpful websiteBad:- Terrible documentation- Terrible set up process- Random updates (why?!?)- Bad bad tech supportWill keep updating. Hopefully will have chance to test battery life and more uploads in the field.

I've been looking for a way to backup and view DSLR photos while travelling without a laptop. The iPad mini makes a perfect viewing platform , but RAW files take up too much of its storage space. This device solves the problem - to an extent.The problem is that the device still does not automatically backup RAW files from the SD card. According to the somewhat misleading description of the product and its associated app (Wireless SSD) in the App Store - and also in Toshiba's own support documents - this feature is supposed to be available with new firmware (2.000.200). I purchased the device thinking the new firmware was available and have been disappointed to discover that it is not: my own device updated itself to the latest firmware (2.000.184) which still only supports JPEG auto backup.All is not lost, however, as RAW backup can still be done manually. There are a number of very good third party apps which connect directly to this device, and solve most of the problems with Toshiba's own app mentioned by other reviewers. I've tried Photosync, Goodreader, FileBrowser and File Explorer - all work well and make moving files around much easier. FileBrowser can copy RAW files from the SD card and onto the drive without first downloading to the iPad - pretty impressive. I can see myself using this device a lot, for all sorts of purposes, without ever having to open the very clunky Toshiba app.I haven't used the streaming features yet but imagine they will be great when travelling with the family.I hope Toshiba continue to update the firmware to provide the advertised RAW backup function. An app redesign is also sorely needed. The Aeromobile is a good device with the potential to be extremely useful - but this is far from obvious straight out of the box.

I am trying to travel light (meaning no laptop), but wanted a way to backup my GoPro. I am so glad I tested this before flying off to a deserted island. It will NOT read SDXC cards. After spending HOURS trying to figure out why I couldn't, I finally found this on their website in the FAQ (see below). Now shouldn't this be in the product description???? I think it is a pretty damn important piece of information. I'm hoping it will work with the SDHC card I have just ordered (smaller capacity). It's too bad because if it worked, it could have been 5+ stars - it's a great concept, just an incomplete execution. Let's hope a firmware update can fix this? Maybe they can also update the software/Android App so that the App can act as the GUI so that I can connect the SSD directly to the GoPro and copy over the cable (male Micro USB 3.0 -> male Micro USB?) and use the APP to manage the transfer. Seems like it should be pretty simple for a programming genius.1-8 Why can’t I find the SD card after I plug it in?a. There are couple different types of SD card. Canvio AeroMobile supportsSD memory and SDHC. SDXC is not supported.PS: Regarding the review about it being plastic. Who cares? It's designed to be LIGHT. And it is. It seems sturdy enough to withstand accidental drops. But, like the other reviewer said, get a sleeve and don't use it as a football and I'm sure you'll be fine.

I bought this item so that I could store essential data to be accessed by the iPad. This meant that photos and PDFs could be transferred and I could stop using the PC. I was fed up with the limited time remaining for Windows XP and could now circumvent it. It all works as indicated and is super portable. However slight reservation on the uploading of pictures from the SD card, need to understand and think more. J P.
