Gorgeous, functional, edc watch with a few minor drawbacks
I have this watch and wear it most days. It's great as a casual everyday watch, or even going dressy. It's also accurate (for a mechanical), and just oh-so gorgeous. Also, easy to read.My main complaints:1) The face and case finish is only available with a leather strap. I'd much prefer a NATO nylon or a metal band.2) The power reserve really doesn't seem to last more than a day or so, so I often have to set it again if I don't wear a watch on the weekend or wear a different watch.3) There's no hand-winding, exacerbating point 2. No hacking either4) No quick way to change the day-of-week complication, so if I don't wear this for a few days, I have to manually advance the movement through several 24 hour cycles.

Orient defies the watch snobs
My Orient Defender watch is much better than I was anticipating. The Orient Caliber 46B40 21-jewel self-winding automatic movement has a 40-hour power reserve, with date, day hand and 24 hour hand, vibrating at 21,600 bph. Mine currently gains about +5 seconds/day while wearing the watch around-the-clock (except when bathing, etc.), which is excellent for a cheap movement. The screw-down crown and 100 meter water resistance is better than many inexpensive automatics. I find Orient movements to be easy to set, even if they are non-hacking -- easier than Miyota, Seiko and even ETA movements, which can have tricky minute hands that are difficult to sync precisely with the second hand. The brushed stainless steel case measures 42 mm x 12 mm, with a 22 mm lug width -- a nice standard width so you can easily find bands to fit -- and it resists scratches nicely. The bracelet looks good and is easy to adjust, though I have swapped mine for a black nylon NATO band. The crystal is mineral, not sapphire, but it is quite clear and has not scratched or cracked after months of everyday wear. The alignment of the markers and chapter ring is perfect when viewed under a 40x jeweler's loop. The lume is functional in the dark though not eye-popping. Overall this watch looks more expensive than it costs. I know watch snobs are merciless in their criticism of makers like Orient, but for us frugal watch fans, Orient is a great brand, with surprisingly durable and accurate movements, and with classic designs that look good on your wrist. Some snobs claim that the higher the bph of the movement, the more accurate the watch, but that's fallacious, just as no musical instrument is more likely to be in tune when playing a higher note as opposed to a lower note. So, don't be scared off by the snobs, because often they don't even know what they're talking about. If you like the looks and price of the Orient Defender, go for it! I think you'll be happy you did.

Elegant simplicity and uniqueness at a great price point
My Breitling Avenger Seawolf broke down and I was devastated when I found out how much a repair and full service was going to cost from Breitling. While I collect myself and save up for that, I still need a solid automatic watch with a date complication. The Orient Defender is a cool and unique watch that stands out amongst a sea of affordable field watches. It feels like a higher quality watch that is absolutely punching above its price point. Yeah, the movement doesn't hack but what do you expect when hovering around the hundred dollar mark? The day, date, and 24-hour complications balance out the face of the watch and were very simple to set without even looking at the manual. The entire fit and finish of the watch is quality and I'm very satisfied in that regard. The shiny Orient logo and polished crown are nice touches. Also, the leather strap it comes with is fantastic.I chose the gray color and I'm quite happy I did. There are enough black and blue watch dials out there and this one stands out a bit more. It also looks great with NATO Straps and the neutral monochrome color works well with a variety of colors. This is a great watch that I think people new to watches and even the enthusiast can appreciate. I could see this being a great first automatic for a newer watch collector. It's working very well for my needs and I can't recommend it enough to anyone who is on the fence about buying it.

Watch looks sleek and elegant but after a few months ...
Watch looks sleek and elegant but after a few months of use, it dies even when you’re using the watch. First it does after 6 hours of non-use. Now it just dies even when you’re wearing it.

Stopped working within three weeks
The watch was delivered promptly, well presented in its case, and it's a great looking piece. However, after about 10 days it started running slow by 3-4 minutes, despite the fact that I was wearing it at least 14 hours a day. After two weeks the mechanism inside the watch (that you can feel winding it when you move) felt loose and much louder than it should, and the watch had to be reset every day as it was losing at least 15 minutes. After three weeks the watch would randomly stop, then start again, before finally completely stopping. When you move the watch back and forth it feels completely loose inside.I thought this was a half decent brand, and a good entry-level Automatic, but it is Orient's cheapest automatic movement and apparently just not that good. Will be requesting a refund, very disappointed.

Marca Legendaria

Sadly, this will be a solid no for me, dawg.
Received it at work and was able to try it out for a single day at work. It honestly looks great; the grey dial is subtle but very unique. I liked to imagine pairing it with a drab olive NATO strap - think that would make a lovely match. However, the watch would randomly stop working. It would require me to shake my hand a couple times to get it going again. I am moving constantly with my hands, all my other automatics lasts me longer than the whole day. I would have to keep adjusting minutes for the first hour. It got busier in the day, I would be losing 5-15 minutes per hour and I would have to keep adjusting it throughout the day. It felt like I was babysitting this watch. After work, went to a bar, come home around 9ish, checked it, stopped somewhere 8pm.Maybe I got a lemon, everyone else here seems to be enjoying theirs but mine only brought me to disappointment.Friends tell me "you get what you pay for" but the 100 dollar Seiko SNK809 keeps great time and hasn't failed me yet.Sadly, this will be a solid no for me, dawg. Maybe a V2 edition of the Defender will come out, maybe I'll drop money on the Sun and Moon or something, I don't know anymore.

I am very happy with this automatic watch
I am very happy with this automatic watch. Looks very sporty, yet understated field watch. It looks and feels premium which is hard to find in this price range ($150CAD). It Keep excellent time. If there is any time gain or lose, I do not notice it. I never had to adjust time. Power reserve is about 2 days after a full charge. It is an Automatic winding with no manual wind option. The case is brushed (almost grey) matte stainless steel with 42 mm diameter, 48 mm lug to lug and has 22 mm strap. Crown is screw in which gives 100m WR. Dial is matte black. It has 24 hours hand, day and date. The lumes are raised and fairly bright. Of-course Orient uses an inhouse movement. The rotor for the winder is little loud but you get used it. The strap is very comfortable. I changed it to rubber strap which gives it more rugged look. It has mineral crystal which is raised. I wish it had sapphire but at this price range you do not expect that. Overall, I am very very pleased.
