Is this the same as the unit on the stand that sells for about $200 more?: 708596K JSG-96OS 6-Inch/9-Inch 3/4-Horsepower Open Stand Belt/Disc Sander

I have no idea, when I bought by Jet sander it came as just that and I had to build my own stand which I would rather do instead of buying a pre made stand because, I can custom fit the stand plus power tool to my own comfortable height and add shelves for standing paper etc.Hope this helps

Is the base of the jet 708595 jsg-96 sander made of cast metal or is it heavy plastic? any problems with it supporting the disc table?

The one I received was metal. But it was so dented up on arrival that I sent it back. I now own a great Rikon sander.

how do I switch from horizontal sanding to vertical sanding

On the lower left side of the belt sander there is an allen screw ( the allen wrench came with the sander it is the large hexagonal "L" shaped piece) loosen the screw and the belt sander bed will be able to move up to vertical, then tighten screw. You may need to adjust the belt tracking when you change positions, see the manual.
