Almost Perfect....
Vaughn has always delivered for me. I own several hammers and flat bars and all are superb. I expected this to be no different and am not surprised to find this mallet is of the same quality one would expect. I love the weight. It is not too heavy for me, but has enough weight to do the job without beating on things for days. I have used cool mallets that are light before and I find they ware you out. But, massive mallets with too much weight do the same thing. I feel this is the best compromise for weight/balance/performance. It can take on big jobs and smaller ones as well. I love traditional wood handles, and this one is just that. Solid and no frills. The part I think that makes this thing a beast is the metal head. It is obvious they designed this head to stay put. If it doesn't, I will not only be surprised, but i will update my review to say as much. I dig the non mar side a lot, but wish the materials were a little bit more dissimilar. I would prefer on a mallet that one rubber be much harder than the other. These are too similar for me, but that is a minor issue. This is a heavy duty tool. I recommend highly. I give it 4.5.

Nicely built, does the job
OK, nobody's going to get super excited by a rubber mallet. But this one's well built, and it works fine, and it's the kind of thing where you think you've gotten along for years without one, do you really need one? And then you get one and you use it ten times more often than you thought. There's just a lot of situations where you might need a little more force than you can provide by hand but a hammer's going to mar the surface. Yes, you can play around with padding and hope for the best, or you can just grab your mallet and be done with it. Just as an example, this one paid for itself ten times over when I had to dissemble a bed in a hurry so movers could move it - as they waited on the clock - because nobody thought to check if it actually came apart after 15 years of use. Oops. Even the big huge movers couldn't budge the components by hand, but a few taps with the mallet and the job was done with no damage.

The mallet gets the job done, feels great, and isn't too expensive. We've been using ours on plastic every couple of weeks for many months now with no significant signs of wear. It also made disassembling wire shelves a cinch. It seems like it could last forever for our applications. Full 5 stars for being made in the USA.

I like to recycle old table legs into wood carving material, this hammer is great for knocking the legs off old wooden tables, and taking old furniture apart for reuse of timber without damaging the timber. This hammer is absolutely perfect for popping apart old dowels, joints and screws. It's a lot heavier than it looks, feels a bit heavier than 24oz, and has some real power behind it, its damn fun to swing.. The handle was a bit rough but nothing a quick sand and some boiled linseed old didn't fix. 5 out of 5 stars, a beast of a rubber mallet, all the way from the Vaughan factory in the USA, highly recommend, thanks Vaughan!. It does have some rebound though, not too much but if you dont want that, get a dead blow, or Estwing deadhead grey rubber mallet, I recommend the latter. cheers from Oz.
