Anyone know the difference between the c12rsh2s and the c12rsh2m (seen in big box store)? can't find info on either on metabo site

Ok, both the above answers are wrong. Call the Metabo HPT yourself- customer service - and answer I got was that this version here on Amazon- C12RSH2S - IS the latest/greatest version of this 12" slider saw. It's heavier and has all the updates per cust svc. Those other versions ending in a 'M' and other letters are older versions. Doesnt make them bad at all, but if you want the most recent model, get this one ending in 'S'. I was confused with all the product codes myself earlier. And to top it off the dewalt 779 seems to have intermediant issues as well. Other then the much more expensive dewalt 780 model, this Metablo version is one you want.

Can this saw cut a 3/4in by 16 inch board with one cross cut?

3/4” yes. 16” no. 12” is the max.

Is there a brake to stop the blade quickly on trigger release?

Yes, however, I will add that this saw is a little under powered for our use. Under lighter use, such as trim work in a new construction house, it should work well.
